To recover, you can buy the leather, remove the one on the car, use it for a template and literally cut the leather, wrap and stitch yourself. That would likely be a lot cheaper than buying the cover ready to install, but will be more work and you need to take your time to get al lthe wrinkles out and get it right, but it is not rocket science either There are how tos out there for it if you search around.

And likely look a lot worse.
I'd rather spend $100 for the precut leather, especially since most people are going to opt for two tone patterns etc. Like mine is perforated on the sides, solid leather top and bottom. The pieces are all sewn together. Then from there you can decide to wrap it yourself, or not.
I think I paid a shop like $400 to wrap/stitch it. But it looks OEM. The shop was skeptical when I handed them this flat, leather, weirdly-shaped monstrosity, but they were impressed how good it turned out.
Reupholstering steering wheels is an art in itself.

I know two people that have re-wrapped theirs and it looked 100% stock (certainly a billion times better than a lot of the wraps too) They have basic leatherworking skills learned via youtube. Not for everyone, but not all that hard to learn this one specific thing and do it if you really want to. Just posting an option. And one of them went on to start making saddle bags for motorcycles as a hobby and extra income
I got an extra wheel with my car when I bought it, so am just letting that thing sit in a box until mine is totally trashed!

That's reassuring at least. I guess I just didnt trust myself with it as I assumed there would be a decent learning curve to get good at it.
And the wraps that I'm talking about require you to remove the leather from your wheel first and then restitch. Not like steering wheel clazzios or anything. They don't go over your current wheel as-is. Wrap is almost an incorrect term as it sounds like a cover. It's more like replacement leather.

Wow, my old thread came back from the dead. I guess I never posted an update. I ended up redoing the wheel with the RedlineGoods cover. A LOT of work, but it turned out really nice. While I was at it I also added some accents on the door cards.
And good point. At the same time I went with alcantara on the door inserts I changed the arm rest, shift boot, sun visors and a few smaller things to alcantara.
