Thumbs up Acceleration improvements with 4.77 gears.

I bought some 4.77 chryo'd gears in an ap1 diff from hardtopguy a few weeks ago and waiting for them to arrive. I am just wondering if anyone has done any 0-60 runs or 1/4 mile runs with them and if so what actual number gains, if any have been shown? I am sure it will make the car feel much faster down low, but does it really help a lot in the 0-60 or 5-60 etc acceleration numbers?
Does it have much more pick up from say 20 mph and just punching it?
Hope this is the right place to put this.

You won't find many numbers on this, because the numbers turn out to be very unimpressive. I suggest you measure them yourself and report back to us.

Acceleration is controlled by power-to-weight ratio, and that's basically unchanged no matter what gearing you have in the car.

But feel free to check out the hundreds of other post threads here about "gears". Lots of people will tell you all about how wonderful they are.

Yeah I have read many many threads with most people saying it is the best single mod short of FI you can do.
So it really only "FEELS" faster and is not actually faster. I find that kinda hard to believe. It's gotta be a good bit quicker off the line at least.

I think 0-60 is faster than stock but in a 1/4 mile it probably evens out since you have to shift more.

Yeah that is what I have read as well. The acceleration I have been told in the 1/4 should be around 1 second faster but then you have one more shift so kinda negates that depending on how fast you can shift.

Id imagine the acceleration would double or at least feel as though. Report back after you get them in. Im planning on getting 4.77s for my next mod as well.

I think what I will do is just videotape the speedometer before and after from a 5 mph roll so I can see how long it takes going WOT to end of first and then same with each gear and then through 1st-3rd or so. Should give a pretty decent idea of the gain with them if it will show. And by using a camcorder I can review it and get the exact time from 5 mph to end of first gear etc. Stop watches and all are really hard to get accurate as it could be off by half a second either way at least and that will throw it all off.

Im on the fence about purchasing the 4.77s. Most of my driving is city and I would love the extra 'torque' in the lower rpms...

Im curious as to how something can FEEL faster but not really be any faster... If not ill just save an extra grand for a used FI kit...

I'm sure if it does feel faster it will be faster also.
I have heard that they are much better off the line so if that is the case obviously the acceleration will be better. I got an email saying mine will be shipped out this week, so hopefully by next Thursday I should have them. Gotta break them in first unfortunately though before I can really say how they are.
I just want to really make sure to test before and after as many ways as possible and free since there really seems to be a lack of actual info on the gains of them.

This is probably the most informative thread about not just the 4.77's but all the FD gears. Check it out
