Clutch Debate
Nice shaybird, My SOS kit chatters a bit in first gear but everything else is smooth. It's funny cause some people love the oem like pedal feel while others hate it. One stated that the PP doesn't have enough spring for his liking. But those people want to feel like they are driving a full race car so they want the uncomfortably heavy clutch. I've had one on my previous car and hated it, so I'm over it. Main thing is that the clutch GRABS when I want it to and the drivability is awesome. Exactly what the SOS kit was designed for!
And how do you propose doing that without altering it's performance (in a negative way)? Drilling giant holes in your flywheel? Shaving around the edges? Shaving it's width? I never understood the need/desire for ULW flywheels on the street... then again, I've never understood the desire of 16k spring rates on Megan dampers on a street car either.
On AP2's dropping down to the 10-11 lbs (from ~22) is going to feel like a night-day difference without any of the 'hassles' of a ULW flywheel.

Just wanted to chime in with the research and experience I had.
1. Early AP1 transmissions had a stronger pressure plate than AP2 pressure plates, despite having the same Honda part number.
2. Clutch buzz comes from defective springs in the friction plate. Honda fixed this sometime during AP2 production. Current production part does not buzz.
That being said, If you have an early AP1 and replace the PP with the current OEM PP, it will feel soft. (ie, like an AP2). Regarding the clutch buzz, I've been told that some aftermarket companies utilize Honda parts; however, that they are using old stock - so you may still experience buzz. (see #2)
My experience: 2001, original transmission and clutch. Upgraded to AP2 transmission @ 80K. Installed current production parts (as of May 2010) + new AP1 flywheel. Currently at 85K - no buzz. Current pressure plate is softer than the original, but doesn't slip. No engine or drivetrain mods.
disclaimer: IMO, YMMV, I stand to be corrected, No animals were hurt or endangered in the production of this post, etc.
