The only reason a diff is going to whine is because the ring and pinon wasnt installed properly. The ratio of teeth from ring to pinion has no bearing on if the gear will whine. Ive installed atleast a dozen sets.
That's not true. Most 4.56/57 will whine no matter what.

I used ti have 4.77's those did not whine at all. For daily driving I would not want a longer gear than that really. For a track it might be different but no experience so can't comment on that.
I really don't see how 4.44's for daily driving would be worth it at all. 4.77's already are noticeable but not anything really insane so a 4.44 seems like a waste strictly for feel and making the car feel better down low etc.

I went back to stock now but only because I went FI. If I were NA again the first thing I would want to do would be to get some 4.77's again. Without the car just feels really slow and dead off the line to me.

Whine can be due to a incorrectly installed FD due to the backlash settings etc, but it depends on the cut, though the earlier ricks were more prone to this.

only difference between ap1/ap2 trans is 5,6 gear ratios and reduction gear.

1-4 are identital ratios.

anywho, ap1 with stock ap1 tranny imho should go with a 4.77 rear gear. makes ratios overall very similiar to ap2 trans. however, the real gangsta mod is to just swap a ap2 trans in an ap1 and keep your stock 4.1 gear. you get the benefit of different reduction gear + carbon coated synchros

now if your FI, i would stick with stock 4.1 gear no matter what, or even go deeper. 3.91's

Mess that one up there? Other way around but I would still say 4.77 for ap1 and 4.44 for AP2

gears = tradeoff
quicker acceleration = less mph per gear

thats what im thinking. if i can come across a 4.56 or 4.57 with no whine preinstalled in an ap2 diff thats what i will do. Otherwise i will just go FI.
