I could understand LED's (i want them) but HID is a little extreme... It would be cool though

dont do it. it looks pretty but output is nearly the same, if you get a high quality LED.

I think for some cars the reverse light is functional...and others its not. I have to step on the brake while driving backwards so the stop lamps light up the back while parking somewhere with no street lights

I would rock them. Not to be a ricer or anything, but those damn little backup lights they have are POS's! The oem lights dont light up shit! I bet those of you who're questioning the OP have never driven backwards in a non-streetlit area...its terrible!

I bought 3W LEDs in hope that they'd make it brighter/better (3W LED's are whats in the higher end LED flashlights...) but they were pieces of crap too! 20-30bucks a pop!

I know newer caddy's have them stock..and its not as though youre going around with your backup lights on (therefore not ricer...?) Its function>fashion
I've bought a couple sets of the aftermarket leds also and neither set was worth the money. None I've experienced even came close to looking like the display pix.

My dad has some Hella driving lights under the rear of his truck to help him while backing up to their camper. They are tucked far enough under so they can't be seen from the side or from behind (F250 with 6" lift and 37" tires) but they still light up a lot of area around the rear of the car.

Maybe you could mount some smaller fog/driving lights under the rear point backwards. Just a thought. If I remember I post some pics next time I'm at his house.

I've never considered the purpose of reverse lights as anything other than an indicator to people behind the car. I don't think they are intended to illuminate the area behind the car for backing up.
So the fact that they are really bright and clear wasnt a hint? And i think they are intended to help you see. They are like little headlights for when you drive the wrong way.

the lights behind my apartment where i park goes out often and backing out my spot gets tricky in the dark. the backup lights do help a little but i would love to have them brighter.

The "fact" that you talk about doesn't even seem to be correct. I don't think they are bright at all, and have never had a car with bright enough backup lights that I could really use them to see at night. They don't seem to be any brighter than the break lights or turn signals, so I believe they are just to indicate to people behind you that you are in reverse.
