vtec is not based purely on RPMS. its based on throttle % as well. so you can be above X rpm and not be in vtec pending your throttle input
This is only true if you are using the hondata header reflash with the 4200-6000rpm vtec window.

Stock, vtec will kick on at 6000rpms. It doesn't matter what throttle position. That is misinformation that gets circulated a lot on s2ki it seems. Go less than half throttle in 2nd gear until you get to 6k rpms and you will hear the switch. Cruising at 6500rpms on the highway, you ARE in vtec.

I'm not sure about that. As far as I remember stock switchover didn't happen if you were doing partial throttle even past 6k rpm (or whatever stock is). The same is for 4200.

I thought the OP was concerned with falling out of VTEC when shifting in which case partial throttle is besides the point.

With stock gears, I can DD to work every day and not even reach 4200rpm which gives me >27mpg. There's plenty of power in 6th on the freeway as 80mph sits around 4k anyway so a little gas and bam, you got VTEC.

I haven't tried the 4.56's but I can imagine you'll be shifting all day long and good luck on your mpg's with who knows how high rpm at 80mph.

Bottom line is it depends what you use your car for.

My concern is two fold. Currently without quick shifting you momentarily fall out of VTEC, this is where the lowered range of the Hondata flash will come in handy. Hopfully it will minimize the CDV from frying on overzelous shifts.

Secondly the gears will roughly increase revs 1k per gear from origional MPH. So if at 80 you were at 4500 after the gears you will be close to 5500.

So with the Hondata flash and gears you could potentially be at 5500 at 80 and be engaging VTEC.

My real concern that we can only speculate about is weather this will be totally useless and annoying for highway use.

Where did you get that you would be at 80mph @ 5500rpms with 4.56s?

At 90mph with 4.77s in an ap2, ~5500rpms.
At 90mph with 4.56s in an ap2, ~5200rpms.

From searching through previous posts on the 4.56's I guess I was misinformed.

If your MPH are correct my concerns are moot, I rarely travel for extended times at 90MPH.

I am pulling the trigger on thes mods and I will give an update when they are completed.

Thanks.

The problem is, you can't estimate gearing like that. At 8000rpms you might be going the same speed and you did at 7000rpms with the stock gears, but at 5500rpms its not so drastic.

Are you going to do the hondata and the gears separately?

The gears on order and I just found a local dealer for the Hondata. I am not sure what I will have installed first but I am leaning towards the gears.

I don't have a header yet so I know the Hp gains will be less. I am more concerned with the drop in VTEC than overall HP gains.

When the gears are being installed I plan on ripping the CDV off too. It annoys me to no end.

Thanks for all the help and comments.
