Default How to remove shift lever with stuck shift knob?!

so previous owner used loctite on shift knob and I've tried taking it off but I don't want to hurt the tranny by twisting the life out if it. some say remove te shift lever but to do that you have to remove the shift knob. if anyone can help me I want to get rid of this shift knob lol thanks!

If the knob won't come off no matter what you may have to cut the shift boot so you can pull the center console off. Once the center console is removed you can pull the shifter out and put it on a vice or torch it or whatever you need to do to be able to pull the knob off. Heat will break down the Loctite.

could you just take off the boot with the console loose then just have the boot around the shifter and then take out shift lever?

From what I can remember that would be a real pain to do. If even possible. You need to unscrew a bunch of screws under the center console to remove the shift boot. Oem ones are super cheap or you can upgrade to a nicer boot at the same time.

I'd just out up a wtb thread or something for them. Can't be more than $5-10 for them.
I can't remember for sure but just pull the center console up and see if you can get to underneath it to remove the screws. You have to unplug the roof and hazard buttons as well.
If you go to my site I have a shift boot installation instructions that show you how to do that if your not sure. I also have instructions for short shifter which shows how to remove the shifter.

If you don't care about the shift knob (planning on replacing) get a giant set of vice grips and put it on the shift knob an proceed to turn.

"Removal / Clean-Up
Q: What solvents can I use to remove liquid Loctite materials?

A: Most organic solvents are effective in removing anaerobic and cyanoacrylate adhesives. Chlorinated solvents are most commonly used. Dry MEK and acetone are used on applications using instant adhesives.

Q: How can I remove a fastener that is "permanently" locked in?

A: The application of heat is needed to remove a fastener that can't be removed with a hand tool. Temperatures of 325F and above is needed to break down a standard anaerobic, 500F for high temperature Anaerobics. A heat gun or propane torch is commonly used to do this process, and careful disassembly should occur while parts are still hot. Once apart, and cooled, use methylene chloride (Chisel #79040) to remove cured excess material. Always wipe down the fasteners with clean up solvent to remove the wax film that Chisel leaves on the surface.

Q: Will my bonded parts stay together 5, 10, 20 years from now?

A: Testing long term durability is a difficult matter and there are many methods of accelerating bond life testing. Some of these are exposure to elevated temperature, heat fatigue, and humidity exposure. The only way to be absolutely sure that the parts will stay together for a ten-year period is to age parts over that extended period of time. The best way to estimate bond aging would be to compare new products to known quantities and determine ratios of performance in elevated aging tests. The longer and more critical the bond life, the more important the testing is."

Good luck!
