replacing the gauge cluster?

Why does it have to be shady? Maybe he's trying to swap over to an AP2 cluster. Maybe his is all F'ed up Maybe it's for a side project.

Mileage is stored at the cluster. Unless there is a real reason to do it, I wouldn't change the cluster. I raises a whole bunch of questions why you are fiddling with the cluster.

Also, get a proper dealer to change it. On my Merc, I brought the car to have the cluster changed at the dealer, so that the change was documented on their system. I had to change the cluster because the cluster just wouldn't work properly anymore ... i.e. lights were flashing randomly, and some pixels were dead in the LCD panel or whatever it's called
