Default "Towing a Trailer"

Aloha,

I'm thinking about using my S2000 to tow a trailer that weighs about 1,500 pounds. I've read previous posts about this topic but some of the threads are quite old so some of the info may be stale and/or the threads are locked so I'm unable to post questions and get answers. Hence, I'm going to re-open this topic with these questions:
  1. HONDA'S WARNING: To begin with, the S2K Owner's Manual specifically warns AGAINST using this car to tow trailers (i.e. "Your car is not designed to tow a trailer. Attempting to do so can void your warranties.") Now, my car is a 2002 so its warranties expired long ago. Is Honda's warning about more than voiding warranties? For example, do trailer hitches reduce an S2K's performance? Does something bad happen when a trailer of ANY weight is attached to an S2K's rear?
  2. MAX WEIGHT: What's the maximum weight that the S2K can pull safely and effectively?
  3. HITCHES: What are the best trailer hitches (e.g. brand, model)? Any hitches that we should stay away from?
  4. COSTS: How much can I expect to spend in total for the purchase of a trailer hitch and its installation?
  5. REGRETS? Was it worth it, in the end, or did you feel afterwards it would have been better to invest in a vehicle that was made for towing?
  6. UPGRADE OR DEGRADE? Does a trailer hitch hurt or help an S2K's market value?

Thanks for your constructive feedback!

There's really not much in the way of new info aside from changes in the available options and there's at least one recent discussion that I can recall. Definitely refer to the existing threads.

I reviewed the thread that CoolGuy094 referred me to and I see no discussion of:
  • Why Honda issued its warning against towing, which is somewhat strange since the S2K has more power than some vehicles that are approved for towing.
  • Whether towing hitches affect the car's performance, even when it's not towing something.
  • Total costs (i.e. hitch + installation).
  • Post-installation regrets, if any.
  • A towing hitch's effect on an S2K's market value (e.g. are potential buyers turned-off by having a utilitarian accessory like a towing hitch on a sports car?).

  1. Maybe "there is a lot of info" in your signature link but it doesn't do me much good if it doesn't answer my questions.
  2. What is your "signature linK"?

Our first tow vehicle, many years ago, was a 1986 VW GTI with all of 102HP. Not pulling too much or for too far, mind you.
