Also I highly doubt you will even feel any difference in throttle response just from an exhaust, even a 3".
Ok 2 people say it, and if one is Max, i stand corrected. (but hey thats whys its an open forum)

For some reason im still very very skeptical that it would have it for every car...one Dyno does not mean its true all around, there are so many factors, altitude, temp, type of dyno...

And than i doubt it is JUST the HKS exhaust, although it does tempt me to pursue it...meh, again very skepitcal

I didnt mean to say you wont make ANY gains with bolt ons but true power is made when you tune it, and if you dont, the money u spent on the basic bolt ons could easily get you gears. Dont get me wrong, its the first mods i did, but if i could go back...

My goal is to have fun with the car not to the extent of FI. 1) FI is too much money 2) this is my daily driver all year round so need to be able to drive it in the north east winters. I would like to improve the performance and know that simple bolt-ons may not help much but I like working with my hands and will install these myself with my limited knowledge. But wouldn't a test pipe and intake also increase my MPGs by 1-2? The sound of the intake and test pipe will probably make the driving more enjoyable as well.

Current possibilities:

K&N Intake
60 or 70mm test pipe

Maybe:
Front strut bar
ETD
Moddiction shift knob

but those bolt ons are useless. i gained like 8 hp max i bet,
intakes and exhaust dont give little to any hp gains.
so i wish that i had just saved a bit more and got kia gears.
+1 for gears, im saving up for them right now
Wouldn't gears decrease your MPGs?

Gears will actually increase your MPG's in the city, but will loose a couple on the highway. One reason I didn't get them is because I had an exhaust, and I didn't want to be turning almost 1k RPM higher than I already was on the highway. It would sort of get irritating imo. Also from what I read, yes an S with gears will be faster from a dig, but from say a 40mph roll the stock one will either be side by side if not beat the S with gears. I never race my S from a dig because I daily mine and don't want to blow my diff up, I usually race just from like 40 to 90 and let off since I don't want to be to crazy.

So yeah for the money I still say get a test pipe and an intake of your choice. You will still even have some money left over and can get a shift knob or an ETD too. I know heeltoe has a nice ingalls ETD that you don't have to cut your heatshield and stuff to install it. My personal preference I would get a shift knob first, and the best you will get is either Moddicitions or a Maven knob from Heeltoe. They are both 1lb or over and are countersunk.

I know this doesnt matter because this is just me, but I would try to save up another $500 and do a nice nitrous set-up. You can definetly do nitrous safely if done right and you can get all the stuff you need new for around $1000, and you can spray up to a 75 shot safely with the stock ECU. There are guys pushing close to 300whp and 250+ ft lbs of torque (yes nitrous actually gives the S a nice amount of torque) with basic bolt ons and a 75 shot on their stock clutches. I highly recommend Dynotune since i've used one of their systems before and they are decently cheap. They also sell the things you would need such as a window switch (lets you control the nitrous though whatever RPM you want. So you can set it up so you only spray between 5000 and 8500 PRM. This way it will be a lot safer and will help since it won't be spraying during your shifts) and you can also get lean shut down switches (it's just a wideband and monitors your AFR's, and if you start running to lean it will automatically shut your nitrous off so you don't blow anything up, and it will alert you of what happend. Pretty neat little things and can save your ass bigtime). They also carry bottle openers and almost anything you could ever need with a nitrous set up. I think it would be awesome to pretty much have a stock S even spraying a 50 shot, would defienetly be faster than one with gears and you also don't have to deal with gear whine, high cruising RPM's, ect.. Just something to think about

With 4.77's I was still able to get over 300 miles on a tank going 80 on the highway with the top down. So can still get good mileage on the highway with gears. Around the city I got better as well. Over all I would say you will lose a little bit on the highway but not very much at all really.

OP an intake and test pipe would be a nice fairly cheap upgrade. Could gain a few hp, getting better sound and look and save a few lbs.

that 'increased horse power" is most likely the increased throttle response.

PLEASE prove me wrong with a dyno, i would looove that, it wud be my next mod than.
Here you go.

Considering the cat seems to be the biggest restriction in the exhaust system, this is a big gain. Like I said, I felt a small difference with the exhaust and felt an even bigger difference when I put on a 3" test-pipe.

I wouldn't get an ETD again, hell I'd sell u mine but I have a thing against that, and its even the ignAlls too...

A countersunk shift knob and a test pipe for def. Seem like the way to go
Again check my signature, "official Budget thread" there's allllooot there

if you're not planning on getting an exhaust anytime soon but want a meaner sound then the fipk would be a good choice. Sounds awesome and throttle response definitely improved.
