Default Where did this piece come from?

Months ago, I was sitting in my S and this (pictured) piece fell from somewhere. I want to say it was from the soft top but I honestly can't remember.

It doesn't seem like I need it but it has been bothering me for months. Hope I posted this in the right section.

Thanks

Its what holds the gas cap. Open your gas door . You will see it missing

Ohh. I see. Thanks for the quick response!

Is it really necessary though? I haven't had it in there for a long time and everything has been fine. I also have an aftermarket fuel cap since I left mine on my car after a fill up once and lost the OEM one.

If you had been using that piece, you would not have lost your OEM cap.

I'm still a little confused. The piece on the door itself just holds the cap? So when you untwist it, you're supposed to place it on there?

Seems like a poor design compared to some of the newer ones where it hangs after it's unhooked.

I just used the bottom tab to "clip" it in and squeezed the sides into that little groove. Is that correct?

OEM gas cap as the string that hold it, but the point of this is so that you arent destroying your paint with your dangling gas cap.

Really? Mine never had it even with the OEM cap. I have an 05 though. We're they added on newer models? I could have sworn I saw an oem with a string on ebay which is why I ask.

You're referring to the string? Mine didn't with the OEM cap that I lost. If that were true, I doubt people would be saying they were putting their caps on the trunks, antennae, etc.

I understand if you're talking about "secret" gas cap holder though. I believe THAT came on every year. Either way, I think I might invest in another OEM cap with the "retaining leash".

Thanks everyone.

Update: So in case anyone wants to know and comes upon this in the future, there are three fuel caps.

00 - 01 = 17670-SM4-A04 (No Retaining Leash)
02 - 05 = 17670-S5A-A32 (No Retaining Leash)
06 - 09 = 17670-SHJ-A31 (Retaining Leash)
