The catalyst is usually converting carbon monoxide to co2 and unburnt gasoline (hydrocarbons to co2 and water). This is only a pretty basic explanation, but you are really just releasing tons of toxins into the air or your garage when you decat. In my opinion the cat is mandatory on a street car for ethical reasons. High flow is the best option for me, but I'm not going to say you are a d*** for running a test pipe... I just never would.

From everything I've read it is a worthwhile mod. I wish it weren't and something else was for the above reasons.

for the test pipe all you need is a spacer on the o2 sensor bung so it's plugged in but doesn't reach into the test pipe.

any cop that's been around can both hear and smell a cat delete - the level of smoke comes down to tuning, fuel and engine conditions. Older engines with lower compression readings will smoke more. Cars with other mods and no tuning will run a bit richer and smoke more as well.

the ideal setup is to run a test pipe and add a hfc cat behind it which is what I am going to do until I can afford a long tube header and tuning.

the reason is a hfc direct replacement is 275 bux, but you can buy a hfc cat that has flanges and can be added to an exhaust for 70 and up.

free horsepower, you'll feel it in the seat of the pants. I have a green side also, but the berks test pipe was a gift, so I rolled with it

I don't have a test pipe (stock exhaust/cat) and STILL get tons of soot/"black stuff" all over the rear of my car. So, I gotta question whether this is a problem with the cat or just a "trait" of the car (I'll go with the latter).

A lot of the poblems with the soot is that aftermark exhausts and test pipes for some reason are about an inch shorter than oem and doesnt exit the rear bumper as far causing buildup.
