Default AP1 Differental

Hi everyone. I have a noisey diff no noise on accellerate or deccellerate. Only when just crusing along under hardly any load. It sounds like a growl a trashed bearing would make. Right now it on my work bench all apart. Not a thing wrong, bearings and gears are like new. Anyone have any ideas?

I've searched everywhere and thought the guys that track cars would have heard of this if anyone has. All advice is appreciated.

Bill

Sounds similar to the noise my transmission was making when the bearings were failing. The noise was not load dependent and was noticeable above ~35 or 40 mph, regardless of gear, which makes me think it was the tailshaft bearings. I haven't opened it up, but a replacement trans (used) verified that the noise was transmission related.

Haha, that's funny I just had the same issue. I swapped in an AP1 trans I had sitting in the garage and it made a super loud whirring noise that was only vehicle speed dependent (not affected by gear, clutch, load, etc). And got progressively louder with speed.

I removed the secondary shaft housing while the trans is still in the car, and one of the two tapered roller bearings for the secondary shaft has some pitting on the rollers, which I'm pretty sure now is where the noise is coming from. Two new bearings and a couple of shim washers from HPD was $74 after tax and shipping. Should be an easy fix. Maybe your trans has the same issue.

To the op, backlash on the ring and pinion was in spec also? How about preload on the tapered roller bearings?
