Cheap/light exhaust
This post is the same as placed in the STR Prep Exhaust thread...
In preparation for the San Diego Tour with its 93 dB sound limit, I made a new cat back exhaust. I purchased this cheap ass funny looking twin loop JDM ricer muffler on ebay and it turned out to work nicely. It's light and very quiet. Apparently it's a clone of a Mugen muffler. This plus two pre-bent 45 degree stainless tubes, a v-band added up to a $150 exhaust assuming a free OEM cat back to start with.

I'll have to get some better photos in the day light. The total weight of the cat back is 20.5 lbs including two rubber hangers, front half 11 lbs, rear half 9.5 lbs. The big four inch exit pipe had to be cut off in order to make it fit. The two straight through passes through the can make for a really light and quiet muffler. I think my wife will like it.
I can actually listen to the radio now. Even going under a bridge it's really quiet with the intake the dominate sound. When I get the car tuned I'll consider getting a final pull with the muffler on to see if there is a power hit.

The v-band was moved rearward to avoid the axle flange. I plan to run it with the rear portion removed with a down turn for local events and nationals.

Under Construction

So if you need a light 93 dB compliant exhaust when running a header and HFC this may be it. I should get some sound measurements at the event this weekend.

What's the twin loop sound like?
Couple pics of mine

I just completed the "Captain Pants Mod", thanks Corey, this sounds sooooo good, gotta say I am really digging the sound! Quieter than expected on the highway as well, top up def has some serious reverb, top down is much better
I'm thinking about cutting off the mufflers and welding two of these http://bit.ly/1cQg7as
They weigh 5lbs each so total exhaust weight would be around 20 lbs. I will spray the muffler flat black so they wouldnt stand out. what ya think?

sorry to revitalise/revivie this thread....
did anyone do any before + after dyno runs, or have an ecu tune?
ill probably do the setup where i extend the pipe with 2.5 to the rear of the car, but will only do it if there is definate power gains to be had over stock. i had mine dyno tuned with a toda/dms manifold (63mm), custom silenced decat (63mm) and an invidia q300 (70mm), i was told there was a restriction and should get a 3" manifold back single exit system... then a dyno tune to get the best out of it.
i dont know how much more flow i would get with a 3" manifold back over this setup (+noise increase)

Bump for a great thread!
I just had mine done today and absolutely love it so far! Mandrel bent 2.5" single with stock cat and resonator in place. It has a very deep tone with no drone, and sounds sooooo nice under WOT! ...and throttle blips while match revving sound oh so sweet! While cruising it is hardly noticeable. I am really looking forward to my next track day!!

Sorry to resurrect the dead here, but I'd love to do something similar. Where did you get the tip? Is it just polished piping you welded up? Do you have a sound clip? What are your thoughts on sound if I also install a HFC? My car is my DD, and serves for autocross/track days.
Well guys! I got it all figured out. Used Rob Robinette's write-up and chronicled the entire thing on my blog. $20 exhaust that shaves 37 lbs. Not bad.
