bought a used diff out of Montreal with a 4.77 in it. We got it take. Apart to R.E.M. The gears and get it rebuilt. Had a bearing cap mod. Anyone seen this?

Ok, so not overly bad, but the fasteners used weren't the best. At least no one said wtf is that

 

Comptech was the first to offer this I believe. I cant tell if that's the brand or not from the pic. But this is the typical first failure point of the ap1 diff. The end cap would flex overtime, throwing the ring and pinion gears apart/out of alignment and then they would sheer. The ap2 diff has some increased end cap material from the factory helping to address this flex. I have had 2 of these failures in an ap1 diff and not another one since moving to ap2 many years ago.

 

OMG now i remember the comptech caps...this was so long ago.
