I disagree with the notion that if one is not "fast", he doesn't put as much heat into the brakes and can get by with a lesser pad.
At some level I agree with you. Newb drivers tend to WAY overuse their brakes and overheat them from inexperience (brake too much, power through the turns, repeat with each corner).

Typically though, the first couple of track days you're so overwhelmed by the experience that you're not really pushing that hard. Instructor's don't really like you to push with them in the passenger seat too.

So, maybe a newb should be using a better pad than an experienced driver can use simply because they need more safety margin. I did all my early tracking on XP10's and I needed them too. Today, I'm much easier on pads even though I'm much faster.
