Forgestar custom powdercoats each set of wheel to each individual own taste. Powder coating is applied electostatically and cured under heat to create a hard finish that is tougher then conventional paint.
Yeah I see that, but it chipped off no problem and didn't seem any tougher and certainly wasn't better adhered than conventional paint.

Strange, I wonder if maybe they recently changed to this?

That is seriously crazy. When I saw the video title I was expecting to see him hit a burm or something pretty hard but where it broke it was a smooth turn. That wheel looks like the pics of rota's you see that hit a curb at speed. That is seriously crazy and glad it wasn't more serious of a crash.

Luckily no one was hit by that tire either.. that thing had some serious speed.

Also, was that a sarcastic "OMG THAT WAS AWESOME!" ? Or were you genuinely laughing about it. I was cracking up at you then I wondered how you could seem so chill about it. I would have been raging.

Yup! One of the many reasons to love Buttonwillow. Hell, I just put a spare wheel on it and drove it onto the AAA flatbed.

Drake--I started laughing mid-slide when I watched the wheel blow past me, was just too funny to see!

I'm shooting an email to Forgestar this morning, I'll post what the say (if anything). I can imagine it'll just be "racing/track use is abuse, so there isn't a 'normal' lifetime for racing use", but we'll see.

Any chance we can get pics of your other three wheels to see what to look for?

Yup--I'll make an image gallery tonight as well and post up the high res images.

In other news, Forgestar just gave me a call and are going to check out the remaining wheels to see if it's normal wear or not. They've also offered me a full refund on them and are going to buy me a replacement ball joint! Pretty good customer service for beating up a wheel on a race track.
