Default Lightening trunk / boot lid

On my race car I have an oem lid, with an APR 200 wing.

I've got the springs removed too, but not done the lock yet.

When I lift the lid, I'm completely amazed at how heavy it is, it's actually ridiculous! Takes a lot of effort with 1 hand, so the spri gs must do a lot of work. I've not yet removed the wing and weighed it, but its probably about 50% of each contributing to it.

Looking at dry carbon lids and wings appears to be expensive, but if I can save some kgs I'd be interested. Has anyone lightened this area?

I think a carbon lid is your best bet. With your wing you need the lid bracing.

I removed the lock and added a pull wire:

Thats pretty cool. I could run that wire/ strap to toward the front since mine is still a street car. Did you weigh the lock?

I just bought a carbon lid which weighs fractions compared to stock. How would you brace a carbon lid?

The lock is actually very light. I did the pull loop mainly to make it easier to open the trunk. I got the wire and wire crimp at Home Depot.

Mark, its actually the trunk being too heavy without the springs helping.

I have the exact same setup on mine but i do take the wing off every now and then.

The wing is very light on its own and i can only imagine that the force with which is pushing the trunk down is not actually THAT big (even though it has a big angle).

I also agree about the inside bracing + wing.

My trunk already has a small curve exactly where the wing mounts. It seems like the wing is pulling the trunk with a diagonal backwards force.

The previous owner of the wing had a dry carbon fiber trunk (cannot remember if it was J's or Seibon) and from what i remember he also had the inside bracing plus his trunk was a lot more bent than mine.

Good info.

The problem is that most carbon lids weight the same as OEM, so getting a light one means dry carbon ££££!

This is a purely theoretical question, but could you run without the lid if your wing was mounted directly to the chassis in the trunk?

The APR wing isn't very heavy. I know I have one. The reason it feels so heavy when lifting is due to the distance of the wing from the fulcrum. A lighter trunk or wing won't make a noticeable difference in lifting force which seems to be your unit of measure.
