Oversteer is good for you

How many of the people who love sliding the ass around were brought up or drove RWD cars most of their life?
'67 Ford Fairlane, automatic
'73 Gremlin X, 3-on the floor
'73 Mercury Capri, 4-on the floor
'71 Dodge Dart Demon
I owned all these before I ever drove FWD, and for most of the time I have owned FWD cars, I have driven these in the winter, in the snow.
'86 Nissan V6 4x4 pickup
'94 Chevy S-10 V6 4x4 pickup
'95 Nissan V6 4x4 pickup
I have 10 years of track experience in my CRX-SiR, and yes it is very easy to drive that thin at 10/10s, but nowdays, driving the S at maybe 7/10s is more fun...
"Understeer is fun because you can't generally lose the car, it just pushes everywhere."
Yeah, enter a corner a bit too fast and it pushes you right off the road into the trees, guardrail, etc. - that is FUN!!!
Ask any pro - they much prefer oversteer - much more controllable, except for SNAP oversteer which early 911's were known for.

After runnning my S2000 in an autoX, we sometimes get fun runs so I hop into my wifes WRX. Wow, what a difference, much more stability, neutral balance (its got some suspension mods including a nice big rear adjustible rear sway bar which is the single best mod you can get for this car beacuse it starts life as a plow pig). Understeer sucks, just grit your teeth as your tires scrub off speed while headed in a straight line out of the corner
In the WRX, it feels like you have eons of time to make corrections (rear starting to go, go a little more, littel more, OK now I'll correct and tuck it back in) whereas in the S2000 you have usually one opportunity to save yourself. BUT, the reason I love the S2000 is that it is a true sports car, no bells and whistles and driven properly is tremendously fast on the autoX course. I started life with RWD:
Fiat 124 TC
a bunch of Spyders (fun little car) and X19s (live up the FIAT reputation_
Kaw Ninja
and than went to the dark side (FWD) with a
CRX Si (at least a great FWD car)
a couple of GSRs (another great FWD car)
and back to RWD with my S2000. All I can say is I will NEVER buy a FWD car again. Our WRX is a great car and I can see having a AWD car to suppliment my RWD car but the feel and handling characteristics of FWD just don't do it for me now. That said, if you are getting snap oversteer on the street, SLOW DOWN, you are driving too dam fast for the street (and don't lift off throttle and brake in a corner when speeding on the street).

That's the thing. Last year they weren't bad at all! Oh well, next season first thing I'll do is book myself in for a skidpad / drift training day.
