Question for people blowing smoke clouds
#11
I went with an ap2 valve cover, and when I still blew clouds I installed a catch can (this one in particular: Brushed Bare Bones Oil Separator ) and I havent blown a cloud since. Catch can, imo, is the answer to this problem; and one that doesn't require drilling holes.

I had huge smoke problems. Compression/leakdown tests were fine. Got catch cans installed and they would fill up completely from empty before I could complete a 30 minute session. Got my valve cover drilled and the problem went away. But I still get oil in my catch cans over time so I’m glad I still have them.

Capped the PCV / intake manifold. I also bought a BMW cyclonic type oil separator for $10, going to give it a try just for the hell of it, if it doesn't catch anything then no big loss, and if it does I will drill the valve cover. I didn't drill the cover right away just out of curiosity.
I have a CW trackday (AMP) on the 16th, so we will see.

I caught over a quarter quart of oil with the above catch system in one session this morning, along with making a mess since I didn't actually plan for catching that amount of oil. I ended up recirculating it to the intake for the remainder of the day.
Needless to say, I'll be drilling the valve cover, capping the port on my intake pipe, and dumping the front drain to an atmosphere vented catch can.

I would catch about 100mL or so of oil every 20 minute session in the catchcan from my PCV, none from the catchcan on the breather on the front of the valve cover. It's just a bandaid, but it works.
