Very informative post. I have been struggling with the decision to get a hard dog roll bar and this helps.
Glad it helps. If you want to track your car the HD bar is the best option short of a full cage IMO.

Thanks. I actually did think about wearing a helmet while driving down there but the blind spot is just too bad. Installing the bar basically turned this into a track only car for this very reason.

The hard dog rollbar is very close to your head in a s2000 any way you slice it. Its a little exaggerated in the pic because there is about 1 1/4" of padding on the front of the bar. One of the reasons I went with the dual durometer stuff was to convey some order of protection to an unhelmeted head. The other option is to move the seat forward a few inches on the street. I doubt that would make a difference but it cannot hurt. The big deal is wearing a harness vs a normal belt with the bar in. The harness will minimize the amount your body can be thrown around in a crash, and therefore minimize the risk of your head hitting something unpadded and hard.

At the end of the day, its all about what type of risk is acceptable to you.
Yeah I guess you have to compromise in order for the car to still be useable, at some point. What about wearing a bike helmet or something smaller, snowboard helmet or something? I know padding will help, but it is not good enough to protect your head.

that would look pretty funny, driving around with a hockey helmet on. Not a terrible idea though. My wife will never get in the car again

what about head/neck restraint system?
i thought it wasn't a good idea to use a harness without a HNR system.

If you track you should wear a HNR. I don't plan on getting back on track without one and used a R3 at my last track weekend.

If you have a rollbar you should have a harness. It will minimize the chances of your head hitting the bar in an accident. A 3pt and a bar is an invitation to disaster as your body can move around a lot more in a crash and your head can hit the bar as its much closer to your head than the OEM roll hoops.

Its true that a harness is a lot more restrictive if worn properly and will probably amplify neck loads in a crash, but I cannot prove that. On balance its my opinion that its going to be safer wearing a harness if you can than wearing a 3pt, but I can't prove that either.

Building a safe and fast track car is going to create a severely compromised street car be it a S2000, miata, or 911. That's just the way it is.

I have the same roll bar. How did you attach the OEM seatbelt without the roll hoop?

The bar has optional tabs welded on for this purpose.

Strange - I don't believe I have those tabs on my bar (bought mine used).

Edit: Just checked the Hard Dog site - didn't know that was an option. Anway, I just ordered the seat belt guide brackets... going to have a local fabricator weld it on.
