You're saying I'm not as safe with that setup than I would be with a factory belt, flimsey seat and thin plastic cladding on the A pillers and roof line?
But don't think that padding is the same as wearing a helmet. I've discussed the difference recently in the Elda-clone bar thread.

Again a tested fact that padding doesn't help unless you're talking about padding inside the helmet.
The high density padding that does work, only works w/ a helmet.

ps. I'm posting this from a hotel lobby in La Jolla. Thanks Richard! It was great to be able to meet you, and invaluable to be able to check out the way your cars are built. Letting me drive around the block was also a treat. Anytime you are up in Seattle, let me know. Hopefully I can repay the favor some time.
pps. La Jolla is a weird place. Spendy restaurants and little shops, tons of hotels, two banks on every block, and the place is stone cold dead by 9:30pm. But a nice place to be on expense account, that's for sure. BTW, the coffeeshop density is miniscule compared to what it would be in a similar neighborhood in the Seattle area. Don't you people drink lattes?

By the way, as long as this thread has been revivied, I ended up:
1) pulling out the soft top and replacing with a hard top
2) having a roll bar (not a full cage) welded in
The roll bar was designed such that it can be extended into a full cage if I decide I want that.
Last fall I also finally bought a trailer, so now I no longer have to drive the car to events if I don't want to. (Still need to get Dad to come along, or at least to borrow his truck as a haul vehicle.)
Car is still street legal and licensed, but not exactly what I would call "streetable". I really do only drive it to track events.
