Yep, the desert tortoises are for real. It's not like it happens every hour or anything, but you do have to stop the run should a tortoise wander out onto the track.

The desert tortoise is an endangered species, as John said, and you're not supposed to pick them up because they occasionally relieve themselves out of fear, thereby voiding precious fluids which they would otherwise be able to re-uptake via some mechanism I don't know about. You know, a desert survival mechanism of some kind.
Of course a car coming at them at 100 mph might cause them to void also. I usually pick them up to move them out of the way of traffic and have never had a problem. Lap times are on the order of 16 hours, hand timed. We'll attach the 'ol AMB if we see one.

spring mountain newbie here!! heehee. anyone want to post turn by turn technique for this track so i can read about how the "experts" do it? i read on another post about taking turns at 60+ mph and going 100+ mph on the back straight - for real? shoot, i'm gonna have to get on the road and practice!
