I've always done top up. Bought arm restraints for use if top down, but never got around to trying them as they seem too constrictive. Flailing arms in a convertible roll-over can get chopped off (whether or not you have rollbar; probably worse with rollbar).
Anyway, top up or down will have no impact on the car's performance. Speeds are too slow in autoX. There's probably a sense of more mobility for your head top-down, but if you have to look over your shoulder at anything you've screwed up. It's totally a matter of preference. I prefer top down.
Road course, I prefer top up. Spears or no spears.
