I had the opposite experience with my M3 vs. Zoran's S2000.

Zoran, how you doing buddy? Can't wait 'till we get on the track again. You better go sharpen up a bit.

j/k, it was nice meeting you.

hi guys, from a friend across the water in England

don't worry about the name - based on my very non-European tan. Most people here are are pretty pale and unhealthy looking!

I was interested in this thread as a previous E36 M3 owner. I think you'll find this must have been a US spec M3. These are well down on power compared to Euro spec M3s.

The 3 litre (1992-1996) over here put out 286 brake and the 3.2 Evo from 1996 put out 321 brake as stock figures. Weight about 1500kg for both.

I used to run an M3 GT which was a limited run based on the 3 litre. About 300 brake, special paint and trim etc, some suspension mods. My S2000 is a 2002 model with about 1000 miles on it

I've never timed any of my cars but my impression is that my M3 was significantly quicker. 0-100 mph times achieved by testers here are generally in the range 12.9-13.5 secs (3 and 3.2 litre). I think the best I've seen for the S2000 is 14.3.

A second is a lot at speed as you know. It is difficult to compare, not least because I drive top down and the impression of speed is high, and also because I expect the S to loosen up over the next few thousand miles.

On a slightly different subject, I wouldn''t even try to take on an E46 in a straight line. Absolutely pointless.

If any of you are ever visiting or looking for info over here, let me know.

Shoulder to shoulder guys

Pete

You really can't compare many US spec vs Euro spec cars. For some reason, (emissions? market research?) the US cars are usually detuned. Even the Jap cars are quicker in Europe. I think the Euro spec CRX Si had 200hp and the US spec was 160.

What US spec CRX Si came with 160 hp, that would be a pretty quick CRX considering the weight?

Again just curious, whats the best 0-60 and 1/4 you've all seen for a stock E36 M3

my guess is frayed ('sup Jeff) won b/c he's an above average driver, and he is not stock from what I recall. my experiences are similar to frayed's, except i wasnt stock back then either (dinan cold air intake and software download). of course, wes was there that night to put me back in my place.
I would agree that between these two cars it would come down to the driver and I couldn't tell of any mods the M had but I only had a cold air intake and have been told that I'm a pretty good driver, keeping in mind the S is less forgiving of mistakes, I believe stock for stock S2000 vs. US spec E36 M3 with equal drivers the S should win at least 3 out of 4 runs. What are your opinions?

I walked him on the front straight, both cars coming out of the esses, at WOT. I then walked him through the entire road course. Those times that he would grid in front of me, it was only a matter of time before I caught him, unless traffic held me up.

My best lap was 2.06. His 2.11. 5 seconds on a road course is a butt whoopin.

But, that's not to take away from Zoran. He's a helluva driver, especially for his second time out, and was a lot of fun to be on the course with. Friendly competition is what it's all about (you should hear the smack talk b/t me and my M3 buddies ).

We were both on R comps.

edit: My car puts down a hair over 230 rwhp. That's what's responsible for the straight line run with me coming out on top. OTOH, the fact that I was faster on the road course is mainly driver. There were other S2k guys (not in my run group though) that were faster than me, one being an experienced instructor, another an experienced P-car driver.

Here's a pic of me and Zoran on the track. He had waved me by b/t T6 and T7, and that's me going around T10.

That's a slowwww corner, fast as hell entry, dump lots 'o speed, and give up lots of velocity for a late apex and a good run out 11 and down a short straight.
