Mid-90s Maxima versus the S2k...
Thought this was kinda funny last night...
On my way home from D.C. by way of BW Parkway (really nice drive at night with the top down
) and was on 178 in Maryland heading towards Laurel.
I was just cruising along minding my own business when I passed a mid-90's Maxima with two guys in it and the mother of all fart mufflers. I really didn't think they were trying to race until I heard the engine of the Max going nuts and they pulled past me hooting and hollering....
I just laughed at them....
I thought they were just joking around until they slowed down and I caught up. I was side by side with them and all of a sudden that evil noise started coming from the Max again. I let it pull about two car lengths ahead....then I downshifted and hit VTEC..... I flew by that car like it was standing still..... I mean, I was four car lengths ahead of them in mere seconds....
One funny thing I noticed was how quiet they were as I flew past them, for some reason they stopped cheering and stuff (I wonder why???)
They hung behind me for the remainder of the drive and turned off before I got home.
I thought those mid-90's Maximas had a little balls, aren't they in the neighborhood of 220-240hp??? I didn't realize that I would kill them that bad....
Also killed a Infinity j30 this weekend....anyone have any specs on those?
Just thought I would share....Out.

stock, they have 185 I think. My friend has one with exhaust, y pipe and intake. Pulls on my car and I have 185 hp stock. We're both auto. Now he has a supercharger and it's pulls pretty damn hard.
I've got a 96' Maxima GLE as my everyday car. If I recall correctly, it has a 3.0L V6 that puts out about 200HP stock.
It's a nice daily driver and when I bought it was a much better option/value than anything Honda or Toyota put out at the time. It got a great sound system, lots of space and has been very reliable.
The strange thing is that the Maxima "feels" faster off the line than my S2K. I know it is just perception, but it does "feel" fast. Someone here once commented that torque, plus a soft suspension can make a car "feel" fast. I think that this is the case here.
It's a nice car ... but it's not an S2K. I am probably going to replace the Maxima, with an SUV in the next couple of years, but I would recommend it to people looking for a nice 4 door sedan.
Oh, one last thing ... the new Z car has an evolved/newer version of the V6 used in the Maxima. I think it's a nice engine ... won a few awards, too.

Did the 95-00 Max have different engine trims? Like a 4 banger base with a V6 option? I mean, I would think with 190HP it would have been better than it was. I was easily pulling him when I was in the 3-4k rpm range....when I Vtec'ed, it looked like he was standing still......
Don't get me wrong, Maximas are pretty nice cars....I was just expecting more from them...

I used to own a 97 5spd maxima SE, which I loved and still miss sometimes. All maximas in any trim from 95-99 had a 190 hp V6 engine. It was a really sweet engine, really smooth and powerful for a 4 door car. The engine was actually voted one of the ten best in the world every year from 95-99. Even though those cars were quick any decently driven S2K would blow the doors off that maxima. I actually had an encounter last week with a 5spd maxima that was the same trim and color as my old one. I was cruising at about 100 on a really open stretch of road and happened to pass this maxima. I slowed down to 50 when I crested a large hill in case a cop was waiting. The maxima pulls up next to me and gives me the look that he wanted to go. Next thing I hear is him downshifting and his loud ass exhaust and engine screaming. It sounded like he also had an intake. I just left it in third because I didn't really think I needed to downshift against this car and we were pretty much even up until about 75 at which point I just kept pulling and pulling. I shut down at redline in fourth gear because he was becoming a speck. Next thing i know he does a ricer flyby, cuts in front of me and puts on his hazards. At that point I figured I would teach him a lesson. He must of slowed down to about 90 so I caught up, pulled even and nodded. This time I took it to redline in 5th and kept going until I hit 140. He was really far back at that point so I hit the brakes and let him pull even. I saw his friend say something to him and then he wouldn't even look my way. I went back to my 100 mph cruise mode and got off at my exit. I pulled over to get some gas and at the next light he happens to pull up. I take off normally and he guns it. We get to the next light and I figure I'll show him what our cars can do from a standstill. I drop at 7k, get a great launch and leave him a few car lenghts behind up to 70mph. I shut down and turned onto my road. I usually don't post kills here but this guy just seemed to think that our car was some sort of joke. I say that because when we pulled even on the highway he kinda sneered. At least I know he respects our cars and won't be playing with an S2K for a long time. And by the way my top was down the whole time. He would've only lost that much worse had the top been up. And for anyone that hasn't done 140, top down, it can really get loud and windy!
