Played with an E39 M5
During my drive home from the office I was caught in traffic by a guy in a pewter colored E39 M5. He was in my rear view mirror for a couple of miles, pulling up to my rear bumper every once in a while to show he was eager to play.
As we approach a red light the right lane opens up. The M5 switches lanes and grabs the front position at the light. I switch too, and pull up behind. When the light turns green, the M5 takes off normally at first. Then as I shift into second, he nails it and pulls a couple of car lengths. I go WOT and manage to hang onto the back of the M5 until we're well clear traffic and the other lane opens up. I pull out from behind the M5 and pass at the top of fourth gear. Once I gain a car length, I lift off and so does he.
We're lined up again at the next stoplight. He turns to me and shouts, "That can't be stock". I shout back "supercharged".

I always loved the E39 M5's but they're only marginally quicker than an E46 M3. I'd sell my M3 and get one if they weren't so heavy...at least my M3 wasn't difficult to get down to 3,100 lbs.
m5's are at the top of my favorites... i honestly wouldn't care to much about all out speed in that thing... just the design is timeless, and has a bit of speed to go with its style.
i just hope by the time i can afford one they won't all be beaten up and in dire need of repair... i could see that motor becoming expensive to repair

i used to pop mad wood for the e39 m5 for almost 2 years straight...just looking at posters/pictures of its rear gave me chills down my spine.
good kill, they're not that quick by today's standards, but they're by no means slow either...

BMW really got the styling right with the E39 M. It is absolutely one of the best looking four-door sedans. Gorgeous V8 soundtrack too.
