My Roommate has a Jetta 1.8t and he has the usual chip, intake turbo catback... during off the line launches, he usually will beat me by a lot. But once we start getting it up to around 40.. i take over... and once we get to 65-80, it's no contest. Rolling launches, and it's no question.. i beat him everytime.

 

The 1.8t engine is one of the most tunable engines i've ever worked with...a chip alone upping the boost 2psi and changing the fuel mapping ups the power from 180 at the crank to 215-235 ish (depending on the chip) at the wheel. an exhaust and a couple other fairly cheap mods and it's not surprising he was only 1 car length behind you...honestly i'm almost surprised that (assuming it was modded with a chip) that it didn't hold it's own because that is an easy car to make haul ass...unfortunately it only has a 5spd so it's acceleration is not so great.

Gotta wathc out for sleepers. My father drives a low 11 sec mustang to work everyday and from the outside you would never know it wasn't stock ( unless you notice the 275's in the back).
Almost every day he comes home with an interesting story.

More on topic.. some chick aorund my neighborhood has a 1.8 Gti with the loudest turbo I've ever heard. I've seen the car go low 13's at Englishtown raceway but I have no idea what is done. It looks totally stock except for the exhaust.
