A Honda Mechanic was quoted in Popular Mechanics as saying, "The stresses on an engine at 9000 rpm are twice that at 8000 rpm. Another 800 rpm is a lot when we're already that close. I haven't built an engine, nor have I tested one, but, if the engine could handle the extra rpm, then Honda would have mapped it to do so. I think it would be more than "long term wear"

Has anyone given thought to this.. if the valvetrain and head components are the same or of equal strength, why not buy a 00-03 shortblock and tranny. Then get a Euro spec cluster and ecu for an 04. Theoritically I'm trying to say that this would work.

This would eliminate the 2.2 and revert back to 2.0. Unless you people are arguing that you want both the 2.2 and 9k or if you just want an 04 or 05 with 9k rpm if it be a 2.0 or 2.2. Tranny would have to be changed out due to gear differences which has been stated already. Or.. get your hands on a JDM or Euro spec shortblock and tranny if there is any difference from 00-03.

This sounds like a plausible, if not cheap, way to get back to the 2.0 engine and it's 9k redline for anyone that just has to have one.

My question is, will it meet US pollution specs on the Euro ECU? That may not be much of an issue for many in the States but it certainly will for those in California. Texas has been getting more strict on this issue in the past few years and I don't see that getting better. I'm sure the same will be true for everyone else. It's just a matter of time.

Just a thought!

The idea is mostly to have the 2.2 with the 9K. If you were going to just stuff the main parts of the 2.0 in your car, it would just be better to buy a pre 04 and replace the asthetic pieces on inside and out (dash, bumpers, etc.).

After all the posts, I agree that the stress would be too much for the stock setup and little if no advantage would be gained. To do this easily, one would have to replace the rods and other parts which is probably not worth it. But hey, I was just throwing around thoughts when I started the thread anyway. I'm sure if I had enough money to blow to actually do it, I'd spend it on something else anyway...ITB's!!!

why do you want a 9K redline. I mean logically think it out. What would that do for you. To me it just means you have to wait longer to shift that slick shifter.

Now to your topic. You would need stronger rods and a lightened valve train to make it the least bit reliable. Does anyone happen to know what the S2000 race cars in Japan redline at? (Amuse, J's, ASM, C-west)
I know for a fact that Amuse uses the USDM engine.

Which means, for once every other country got the watered down engine and the U.S. got the more powerful engine. Everyone in Japan wants USDM parts now. How ironic. And if the U.S. was the only country to not get the 2.2L everyone in the U.S. would want it.
Put that in your smoke and pipe it

Do they really want 2.2 everywhere els?

NOPE, the average piston speed of a S2000 (F20C) works out to be 25.2m/s while in a S2200 (F22C) it is 24.8m/s.

so someone needs to put an 00-03 ECU into an 04 car, have the immobilizer reprogrammed, start the car, and rev it to 9k and see if it blows up or not

I agree... someone should do that. If possible on a dyno.
