xviper - you are a true pimpster.

Not totally jacking this thread - But are 4.44 gears J's Racing or Mazda? I want new gears, but:
1) Don't want a whine
2) 4.57 is too extreme with my amount of freeway driving
3) Cannot afford J's Racing Gears

I am looking at the 4.44 and 4.3? I think it's the 4.3 that's also lower than 4.57. I'd like to get just a Mazda gear and a Comptech reinforcer, and put in some Redline fluid and call it day... Where did you get yours? Thanks a lot.

I got the 4.44 J's from AJ Racing when "gears" were still a novelty for this car. And yes, I paid BIG bucks for them because noone knew there were other choices then.
4.44's is a hard find. 4.3s are not a big enough a difference to warrant the effort.
I don't think 4.57s are too extreme for highway duty. Some guys even use 4.77s for highway and find them "tolerable". Of course, I'm talking about AP1.
Be careful which Redline you use in the diff. I experimented with Shockproof and the oil analysis was NOT good.

Well I'll just get whichever come available, be it 4.44 or 4.57. Thanks for the tip on the fluid, I'll research it more until I come to the point. Thanks again.

Cut and paste this link to see the changes in speed for each gear on your '05.

http://www.turnzero.com/technical_resource...gear_calculator

Top speed in 4th was 99.5 but will be 89.2
Top speed in 5th was 122.5 but will be 109.9
Top speed overall was 151 but will be 135.

So, for 1/4 mile racing you will have to shift to 5th most likely in either case, but will be in it from 89-102 or so with the 4.57 gears, while it will only be very brief with the stock setup.

The 16 mph drop in top speed may or may not be an issue for you, but seems a bit low to me.

I have 4.44 gears on my '01, it doesn't require any more shifting than stock for 0-60 or 1/4 mile and my top speed is still 154 mph.

Like the other poster said, Honda corrected the gear issues with the '04+ cars, changing them again may or may not be overkill based on what you want out of the car. Good luck.

who the hell uses 151 instead of 135 mph. not mention the gears should save u gas in the city. so, over about 5 yrs, the pay for themselves.

This is true if all you do is drive in the city. However, if you do highway a lot as part of your routine, then the elevated cruising rpm in 6th will affect your overall fuel economy. My highway mileage dropped about 4 mpg when I went to 4.44s, but since I only do 1 or 2 big highway drives a year, this has not been a bad thing for me.

Is it not possible to just put/keep a longer 6th gear in for highway driving?

This would involve taking the transmission almost completely apart and finding a 6th gear that will have the desired ratio AND will fit. It may also not be as simple as just finding ONE gear. In this case, you may have a driving gear and a driven gear.
Putting final drive gears involves taking the rear differential apart, which is a small job compared to taking the transmission apart.

Sort of late in this post - as well probably a bit since I see thing are leaning towards details of gears.

But to answer the original question of this post - honestly I would have recommend the Comptech Supercharger!

I installed mine April of this year and have been rather happy since. Granted I have made quite a few adjustments with smaller pulley, larger injectors & ems but their are plenty of people with the stock unit that think it is still fun!

Anyways, best of luck!

Actually, here is his original query:
What in your opinion should be my first mod ? Intake? / Exhaust? / Gears?
Therefore, "gears" is within topic AND his presumed price range (given his statement about being able to afford 1 but not all), while a supercharger is not.
