Well. I guess I'll be the guinea pig for 2001 MY 1-2 grind theories.
As predicted by cdelena, the 1-2 grind in my car appears to be tied to temp. Today was 80+ up in Napa and the North Bay. That combined with the couple hours of (pretty hard) driving created the situation described by cdelena in earlier threads.
The first 1-2 grind of the day occurred on the way back at a stopsign. The second occurred about 15 minutes later at a stoplight. At that point I became REALLY paranoid about my shifting. The third occurred back in SF on my return (despite my paranoia).
To sum up my posts in other threads on this topic (and to preempt the usual "it was driver error" responses - my qualifications follow:
- almost 40 years old,
- been driving sports cars for around 20 years,
- learned to drive on a stick and have only owned manual transmission cars,
- have owned cars with funky transmissions (TR-6, MGB),
- used to drive a friend's R5 Turbo (one of THE funkiest transmissions of all time),
- have not (to the best of my recollection) ground a 1-2 shift more than once or twice a YEAR (defined as human error and laziness) in my life,
- skilled with double-clutch shifting and rev-matching,
- Skip Barber attendee.
So... I'm about to hit 3500 miles so I guess I'm going to take the car in and tell them I seem to be having the 1-2 grind problem. I realize they'll blame me (driver error) and I might get screwed as a result. But I might get lucky on this - and even if I don't (and this is a problem with the 2001 MY as I fear) at least we'll start to build a pattern.
Sigh... will let you know what transpires. Wish me luck.

Today I grind 1-2 twice. The first time I knew I had the
clutch all the way to the floor on the shift and it still
grinded.
The second occured later in the night after the car was
sitting for two hours then started again and driven not
very hard for 30 minutes. This time I also had my foot all
the way down. But this second time I noticed something
weird with the way the rpm's dipped after the clutch was
depressed. I fully depressed the clutch and shifted but at
the time I initiated the shift the rpm's didn't move for
about a second, it kinda stayed at 5500-5800, decellerating
slowly as if I hadn't depressed the clutch at all.
This has happened about 3 other times, all of them 1-2,
never any other gears. TSB55 mentioned this would happen
at high RPMs on 2000MY S2000s, I believe in my car, it
happened at relatively low RPMs, below 6000. At what RPM's
are all of you 2001MY owners who have this problem been
getting the grinds?
My car is 2001, number 4414, with 1650 mi. At first I
thought I was being careless, but today, I knew the clutch
was all the way in both times it happened. Gonna take it
to dealer also very soon.

Usually in second gear, but every once in a while in first, always below 3k RPM. I can take one drive and it won't happen at all, the next it can happen at most starts. 2001, 2 days old, 100 or so miles...
I'm having the alarm installed at the dealer in the next few days, so I'll ask them about it at that time.
