A buddy of mine at work bought a '01 S2000 with 50,000 miles for $4500 or $5000, I forget, but it obviously needed work

Originally it had a malfunctioning speedometer, inproper fuel level/coolant temp readings, ripped soft top, dirty interior, mainly seats and carpet, due to sitting outside for months with torn soft top, ugly sparco seats, intermittent power steering, misfires, some loud aftermarket exhaust(I think it was an apexi n1), a beat to hell/limp carbon fiber vented hood, a missing spark plug cover, paint chipping on valve cover, a dirty engine bay, about a year old tank of gas, and that's about it.

-he checked cylinder compression, which checked good
-did a must needed valve adjustment
-bought oem s2000 seats
-took seats out and cleaned all interior panels/carpet
-secured all loose wires going to connectors behind cluster
-drove here and there and eventually fuel gauge worked 100%. Went from not working, to only reading a certain level and below to full function.
-replaced oldest looking plugs I'd seen in a car
-replaced obnoxious exhaust with oem ap2 exhaust I had
-further troubleshooting of misfires led to disassembly of fuel rail/injectors and found chunks of rubber o-rings blocking fuel inlet to some injectors. Car runs SMOOTH now, no check engine light
-in process of installing replacement soft top
-still needs an oem hood

he got a good deal regardless, but obviously if you find one this cheap work is going to be needed. I'm sure others around this price, with a clean title, will have bs problems like this one.

last owner should have never been allowed to buy any car like this.
Realistically how much has he put in, including his own labor costs?
Prolly $15,000 or so

I think $2000 is a bit too low. Maybe more on the 5k is realistic.

most if not all cars below $2-3k are junk. s2000 will never be a junk car.

Never, the frame alone if in good condition will always fetch 3-4k alone. There will always be outliers but an average condition s2k will always fetch good money, clean examples with low mileage will even appreciate in value as the time goes on.

So yea don't expect to be getting in a decent s2k anywhere below 9k

Not true. I bought this for $1200 with 193k miles in April 2010 and sold it in 2011 for $1560 with 211k miles. Bone stock, original one owner. Even the original dealer window sticker was included. Since it was a Florida car its whole life, there was no body rot.

i agree here. in my extensive search for my '03 AP1, looking at s2000's of all vintages, none worth buying ever dropped below $9000.

15K??? />

I see 2-3k in parts, and that's with paying for an exhaust.
He did his own labor so that's free, but for arguments sake lets say 3k including softop replacement.
Made out like a bandit unless i'm missing something...

He bought my ap2 exhaust for $100, around $600 for seats, around $500 for top, factor in another few hundred for the hood. He'll have spent no more than $2,000 for everything.
