2001 Needs New Engine. . .
Thanks for the oil information.
How is your repair proceeding?
I'm assuming you are having it covered by warranty.

It's hard to believe that under normal, but spirited use, these engines are needing to be replaced at 6500 and 19000 miles.
While I believe that Honda will replace the engine, I would be interested in knowing what is causing these problems as well as Honda's position if the replacement engine goes in 10000, 20000, 30000 miles.
Just got my car last week (black with black interior) and I love the car. Besides fabulous looks, handling and speed, brought it based on being a Honda and its' reputation for trouble free dependability. Hope this engine is not another Mazda rotary.
Let us know what Honda says about these issues.
Good luck

We don't really know for sure why the engines are failing, but many of us think it was a defect in manufacturing for a certain run of engines. If you look at the statistics taht Barry is compiling, you'll see that it primarily affected early 2001 models.

Keep in mind that the total number of failed engines that this board is aware of so far is somewhere around 25. When you take into account that Honda produces around 20,000 cars a year, for over two years now, this is a very small percentage.

To predict total failure rate, we should divide the number of known board failures by the number of known board owners, or (Failure %)=(# failures in sample)/(sample size).
We have had about 1800 people register as owners, add another 20% just to be generous (to Honda) for owners who never submitted their VIN to be marked as owners, and we have 2160 owners in our sample set..
25/2160 = 1.2% failure rate, or just over 1 out of 100 cars.
Wouldn't it be nice if Woodwork would get some real numbers for us, like exactly how many S2K's have been produced to date, how many #4 cylinder failures are on record, which years, and in which countries.....
It'd also be nice to have someone that is part of a Japanese car-club for S2K's be a part of this board as well, that way we could share a lot more information.

Yes, you are correct. Still a low percentage.

Update: April 1, 2002
Hi Everyone,
Just to let everyone know, I picked my car up Friday afternoon (3/29/02).
Honda replaced the valves (I'll post the full list of parts replaced tomorrow).
I'll post updates regarding performance. . .
Later.
