Default 2002 S2000

I wanted a RX8, then drove then 350Z. After some consideration, I decided the RX8 wasn't for me and that I wanted a 350Z. I had been wanting to try a S2000 for quite awhile but the local dealer didn't have any and hadn't had any for awhile, so I was out of luck. Well, Friday, they got in a 2002 black/black S2000 with about 47k (maybe 42k) miles in excellent condition. I drove it and I am amazed. It lacks the low end grunt of the 350Z, but I love the 9k redline and the way it drives overall (feels like maybe it handles just a bit better). Anyway, the asking price is $24k, but I know the dealer/salesman and have bought from him before and I sell cars for the owner at another dealership. I don't think I can get the car at no profit, but I am pretty sure I can get a good deal. KBB says it's worth about $22.8 at a dealer, and trade-in value is about $16k, which means wholesale is lower. What do most people get/buy 2002 S2000s for? I don't know a thing about Hondas, so was hoping for some advice here (I can tell you all day long what constitutes a good or bad deal on a Toyota hehe).

Are there any issues with the 2002 that I should be aware of?

Thanks for any input here!

Definately look for a better deal than that! I guess the prices depend on your location, but on the average, low low 20's is what they should be getting at MOST for that car. For $25k, you're looking at 04+ with low mileage. Good luck on your search.

FWIW, in chicago, from dealerships:

we ALMOST bought a '02 suzuka blue w/ 37K mi for $19.8K (alread had intake/exhaust). ended up w/ a very clean (tho not perfect) '02 black/red w/ 24.5K mi for $19.2K

i actually have the wholesale auction results of the last 30 days for '02s, and they avgd 17-18 for clean cars w/ <= 12K mi/year.

Averaged 17k-18k eh?

I think I will pass unless they come off that price another $4k. The sad part is I work for the owner of this dealership at one of his other lots. lol Maybe I should ask him if he'd let it go at cost. Hmm.

RVM, you'll love the car if you get it. Seems most of the kinks of the early years were worked out by mid-MY02.

Good luck!

I offered $19.5k for it. I'll hear back from them in the morning. I'll also talk to the owner too, if he has time.
