Times like this remind me of the famous brand-guy quote, "There's more to a sports car than acceleration and cornering."
We should all be counting our blessings that we have so many good choices other than Accords and Taurus' (which are fine sedans, OK?). Hey, we could be living somewhere where a Trabant is a step up!

well, i am not a manager at a BMW dealership and if i was i wouldnt drive or buy one......er i'd torch the place.
First - its expensive for sedan.
Second - all bmws look the freakin same!!!!. (hell even civic line has more variety)
Thirdly - BMW sucks, generally. sure they got heritage but they are just boring - anal almost*.
finally - Honda has that 'we are the cool motor company' thing going for them. (as opposed to anal)
dont get me wrong, bmws are ok, they just arent everything they make themselves to be, BTW - my 2004 NSX is on the way - i am driving a 88 civic (and eating a diet of rice only to save money) in the meant time till it eventuates.
*anal is reserved for ppl driving overpriced front wheel drive europeans cars and think they got culture.

As far as heritage goes, just remember both companies' first passenger vehicles were motorcycles. BMW's 'heritage' in cars in only about 40 years old; Honda's is about 30. BMW started as a WWI airplane engine manufacturer and only became interested in ground transportation when the treaty of Versailles prevented them from making defense goods. Honda started as a piston ring manufacturer, but Soichiro was always a hot-blooded gearhead. The Quandts (primary owners of BMW) have been rumored to be looking to get out of the car business for most of this past decade.
BMW makes great cars. So does Honda.

SoCal Craig: As affore mentioned, no one will know the changes until late this year, the only thing we can do is speculate (which people on this board will do until they are fighting mad for nothing). StwoK is probably the closest in his outlook, just look at history...S500, S600...it is more than probable that this will happen to the S2000 in time, this car was named after the first "S" series cars, and has a 9K redline specifically to harken back to their even higher redline. *on a side note if you want to understand iVTEC just think about the timing being advanced and retarded in concert with the normal operation of the engine and VTEC to generate even more efficiency, which in turn adds a small amount of HP and TOR.
Secondly, there is NO evidence that running this car to redline before the manufacturers suggested mileage to do so causes any harm (if someone tells you there is they are lying), but it would be wise to adopt an attitude of "better safe than sorry" if you get one, or test drive one. This engine will not be fully broken in until over 10,000 miles, so the best performance #'s will be had after that, as stated before, it does feel much stronger with some miles on it. Its been hinted by gregstevens that he has privi knowledge of certain things, and he does, but he also came back from the factory with no knowledge of a glass rear window which was clearly in the making at that time. Also, Honda does put every engine on a circular carriage for testing before they go in the car, and yes, they are tested for redline, Honda does this to ALL of their cars...no exceptions. *No flame, just setting the record straight. Greg, just because you didn't see it doesn't mean it isn't there.
Peace
Andrew

No flame taken...
In the conference with Honda, they were really guarded about what they were saying were going to be changes in the next MY. They wouldn't even be specific about WHICH blue was coming to the US. We were able to deduce from their expressions that SOME blue was going to come here. But as far as the glass rear window, they seemed pretty adamant that it wasn't going to happen and that's the info that I was going on. I stand by Honda not taking every car around some testing course...they may, but it's not something that we saw. But the "dyno's" that were alluded to earlier (really just rollers to allow the tires to spin and the car to remain stationary) are NOT running the car to redline. It MAY happen before the engines are put in the car, but it does NOT happen on these rollers...that is done to test the accuracy of the tach and speedo. Not to test hp as was suggested ealier...
I don't have any 'secret' information on the S2000! I'm just a guy who visited the plant, took in what I could and related it back. Honda doesn't confide in me their next big secret! lol

SoCalCraig, I also had the same worries about low torque like you. I had a 95' RX7 so you know i was used to torque and turbo. All I have to tell u is once you have the S2000 you will not regreat a thing! The exhiliration and sound of VTEC makes you forget of low end torque. When you drive this car you feel like you are one with the car (which is a great feeling).
I look at it this way: If it is a daily driver you will drive around in the best roadster there is, then when you wanna mess around just punch it and the power will be there! The S2000 will not let you down!
