2003 S2000
No, while I really admire the M3, it's not a sports car...it was never designed as such and with the E46 version, it's CERTAINLY not a "sports car." It's a sports SEDAN

I don't mean to be a "troll". And at some point I probably was. And I'm sorry if I offended anyone.
I promise to behave myself. I just wanted to express a different point of view. That is all.

[B]Hahahah that's funny!
You don't think I haven't driven one? I'm a manager at a Honda dealership and can drive one anytime. Would I buy one....No. First it's too small. I need a back seat. Secondly, it's plenty SPORTY and has more prestige and heritage than a Honda. BMW has been around for a long time. And is known for their Ultimate Driving Machines.
Don't get me wrong, I love Honda's they just aren't everything people say they are. BTW, my 2002 M3 is on order, that's why I'm driving this 325CI till it arrives.

Back to SoCal Craig original question about the 2003 S2000!
Don't forget about Honda's first roadster made in the early sixties, the S500. Over the next decade it was followed by the S600 and then by the S800. Each model change denoted by an increase in engine displacement in CCs. These engines were also high-revving for their time.
For 2002 Honda released to new i-VTEC models, the Civic Si and the RSX. Both of these cars are front wheel drive. And what makes them different from other front wheel drive Honda's is the i-VTEC engine that rotates clockwise (older FWD Hondas are counter-clockwise). The S2000 engine also rotates clockwise, this would make it a perfect and easy candidate for i-VTEC. i-VTEC improves both mid-range torque and fuel efficiency. My guess would be that Honda's corporate strategy is to introduce i-VTEC to their high end cars (EX vs DX models) in the near future.

Craig,
If you want to bring the Viper down to New Orleans, I would love to let you redline my 2000 S2000 a few times.....as long as I can do it in yours.
I liek your choice in cars.....get rid of the Bimmer and come to the darkside.

Test drove a 2002 white/red last weekend. Car had 7 miles on it. The salesman had no clue about break in procedure and I went no higher than 6K. I wanted to see differences in the transmission smoothness and gear-backlash buzz on deceleration which was improved. The glass rear window was still OK to see out of.
The all-red interior was asthetically OK, more so in person than in images I'd seen.
I made it clear to the salesman that the car should not be reved beyond 6K untill 600 miles. Also showed him how to close the hood properly. Could not believe his lack of knowledge about this wonderfull car.
Decided to keep my MY 2000 and just get the service bulletins for clutch & tranny, new rear window and the top latches.
The other thing I've noticed lately is when the car is cold it can be very hard to get it into reverse. So much so that I always back it into my parking spot so I don't have to use reverse after cold starts.

Everything is relative. Going from a Viper to anything else will give a perceived lack of torque. The Viper has, what, more torque than the average semi? I went from a '93 Integra GSR with a 1.7L VTEC and about 100 ft-lb of torque to the S2000, so for me the S2000 appears to have plenty of low end grunt for tooling around town.
As far as adding a supercharger as someone mentioned, the Comptech does not add low end and the Vortec is only rumored to add low end because of the air-to-water intercooler, but no one has seen real dynos yet. Right now the only way is turbo which is out of reach for many folks budget wise and emissions wise.
