2004 First Oil Change
Always glad to throw in my 2 cents...
From race engines, I can say a few things...
1. It takes 20-60 minutes to break in a race cam. These cams are way more aggressive than anything on a street car and use way stiffer springs. The process requires running with low ratio rockers (1.2 vs. 1.8 for race), taking out the valve spring, and then adding these back one at a time. These cams are violent enough to require new valve springs every 6-10 races (8-20 hours running time). For a street cam, after an hour of light running, the cam should be broken in. In most cases, I imagine it has that much before delivery.
2. There are some people who use dino oil for ring break in. Numerous engine builders go straight to synthetic. We tried going straight to synthetic 2 years ago. It worked fine. Those who dyno first say 2-7 pulls and the rings are broken in.
3. If you know of any oval track racecar running anything other than synthetic oil, please tell me. Different people use different brands. I use Torco. Mobil1, Royal Purple, and Amsoil all have their adherents. For the street, Mobil 1 is half the cost of the others and available in BJs and Costco.
4. What reason would there be for adding an additive in new motor after break-in?
5. The first oil change after break-in removes the moly grease used on bearings, lifter, etc during assembly. After that, a good synthetic probably doesn
