2005 compared to 2008

It's only 9lbs dude...that's the equivalent of .01 seconds slower than an 07.
It's a commonly accepted rule that for every extra 100lbs, the 1/4 time increases by .1 second.
Unless that 9lbs is in the wheels/rotors, I SERIOUSLY doubt you'll even notice a difference.
The 2008 also has stiffer suspension, revised gauges, and new seat design.
I would rather have the above for a 9lb increase

This = slower lap times.
It "feels" much more stable around corners, and probably insires more confidence. I noticed it Immediatly on a test drive of an 08. But I can understand how it would limit conering speed.
IMO its a good thing. The daily drivers will have the 08 Base option for a good stable car to drive around brisktly w/o fear of the rear end coming out on them like an early s2k.
And on the other side you have the CR with its excellent handling and aero to nail down some good tracktimes.
- Anyone who says they can perceive a difference between DBW and conventional throttle is full of shit. Driven both on track - no difference. This has been the opinion of automotive reviewers as well.
- New is typically always better. TPMS is great. As is a passenger airbag cutoff. Maintenance minder. Temperature sensor. All little goodies that make the car better. To hell with the idiots that say otherwise.
- Plenty of folks think VSA is for fairies. Fortunately or unfortunately, there were plenty before them who thought the same and then wrapped their S2000s around a pole. On the street, there should be no reason to turn off the VSA (which is quite unobstrusive).
- An 08 was found to be slower by one publication out of many. Many factors could have played a role in this. There is no reason for Honda to tune the car for more understeer with the presence of VSA. Thus I highly doubt the car is "slower". In fact, the same magazine, SCCA, noted that the 08 felt much more stable and planted, especially under high speed braking. Is the 08 as fun as your 05 and 01? Yes? Then who cares.
- Enjoy the car. Congrats.

I stopped in and test drove on 08 at lunch today. The throttle seemed just fine to me and compared favorably to my 05.
I noticed another difference, the little "parcel shelf" thing under the passenger side dash. That is pretty cool and looks like where my wife will keep her shades
.
The car seemed very smooth and frankly quieter than my 05, but in consideration for this car's future owner I did not hammer it (less than 20 miles on the odo). If the suspension is any stiffer my behind could not tell. The steering seemed a little heavier than my 05, but that could have been my imagination.
The wheels have grown on me some and do look better in person than in the pictures.
I am planning on selling or turning in the 05 and getting an 08.

I picked up the new 08 yesterday. I got an insanely low price and super lease deal. The net is a little higher than my 05 lease payment, but the residual is about $1k lower while the MSRP is $2k or greater on the new car.
The scene in my driveway this morning:

So the 05 is now for sale or I will just turn it in next month - it already passed the pre-turn-in inspection with no problems.

The 05 is at the end of the lease, so I could either buy it or turn it in. For the deal I got on the 08 the difference is $10k or so - but I am leasing the 08 and not buying it yet so the payment is cheap.
Lots of reasons:
I traded my 01 to get the 05 and didn't mind. I love the car as it is and have no desire to mod it at all other than stuff like the stereo and a VooDoo knob. I can afford either one, so why not get the new car? I get a new car with a full (and longer) warranty plus all the new changes. I already have HDTVs, HD Tivos, iphone, etc, etc, etc. I would take the same number of trips if I had the 05 as I will having the 08.
Now if I owned the 05 and it was paid for and I was trading it in, that would be a different story.
If they are still making the S2000 or a nicer replacement in 3 years - or if someone else makes a convertible I like better - I will likely turn in the 08 and get something new. I have had an M Miata and a C5 'vette convertible and I love the S2k most of all and each one from 01, 05, and 08 just gets better. I DO miss the 9k redline on the old car, but not the plastic window and other things about it.
