I know it defies the obvious statistics. But consider that many people tend to seek out resources only when they have a major problem.
This board is THE major S2000 resource on the net (or anywhere for that matter) and with well over half the US being connected to the net I'd guess most luxury car owners are in that in that net-connected half. This resource therefore is very easily accessible to most US S2000 owners, most of whom never bother to register.
Case in point; regarding this specific issue alone, I recall a number of the people posting about their problem were 1st time users of this board. They would likely have never registered as users had they not had the issue.
Because of this propensity of users to register for forums like this only when they have problems, meaningful statistics of any sort can probably not even be guessed.

I see you all didn't like my "back of the envelope" calculation.
My point was to try and estimate the prevelance of the "failed" engines. There are many, many, variables that cannot be accounted for in this situation, for example, how many happened for cars that were not reported, how many occurred due to misuse, etc.
One thing that may lead to skewed results is that I'm assuming that most of these incidents have been reported here. This is based on my belief that when someone's $32,000 Honda eats an engine, they would make some noise about it here. This is supported by my experience with any and all internet sites is that you tend to get a whole lot more bitching than praising.
That said, I would adjust my earlier calculation using Barry's (who's done a great job monitoring this "problem") numbers by excluding the non-US sales as I can imagine that S2Ki's population is nearly 95% US.
If you use just the S2Ki registered owners as your sample population, I think you'll have an excessively high number.
There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.

It is a metalic tap tap tap that gets faster with increasing rpms and, at least in my case, disappears into the general engine noise at about 5,000 rpm.
Once it comes, it doesn't go away until the damaged cylinder is replaced.
There is a similar noise that cold engines make. The similar noise is apparently from the timing system and disappears when the car warms up.

I didn't have the cyclinder problems but had an extreme oil consumption problem, 1L/1000kms.
Got a short block and valve seals replaced.
