$294 Speeding Ticket!
Let's get this straight: you're in a 65 MPH zone on a downhill curve passing a truck which itself is going 80 MPH and you're surprised you got a speeding ticket? I suppose I've always been surprised when I've been ticketed for speeding, but only because I didn't know the cop was there. I think you're confusing being targeted with just being caught.
The officer may actually have cut you a break. Depending on the jurisdiction, you might have been in even more trouble if he had cited you for going more than 20 MPH above the limit, which in all likelyhood was the case.

I hope you fight and win the ticket... i believe the reason the cop was being a dick is they do have the authority to issue warnings or even let you off but noooo. I personally dont like a majority of cops cause it seems the only time i see them are the local speed traps or harassing students around the local college.
As a kid I was driving a 49 ford with a '54 Olds engine in it. I was speeding between stop signs which were at the end of every block. I could easily wind out to 35-40mph but then I would have to slow down for the next upcoming stop sign. I did make every stop legally but a cop one or two blocks over HEARD me. I wasn't speeding when he turned the corner and placed his cruiser in my path to block me at an intersection and proceeded to ticket me.
I thought I had a perfect case since the cop never did observe me speeding but the judge thought different.(quote) "Our policemen have trained hearing and could tell by the sound of your engine that you were speeding and can make a very good judgment of how fast you were actually going"(end quote) End of case, paid the ticket and left.

20 over can be considered reckless driving in some states, your lucky that you didn't get a few tickets. I drive into VA a lot, so a radar detector isn't an option, but I've gotten good at spotting cops. I'm at 0 points, and I regularly drive "like I stole it." Watch for break lights 1/4 to 1/2 mile ahead. If people are stepping on the breaks just around the next corner, odds are there is a speed trap.
Of course speeding late at night with no one on the road is asking for a ticket.
Finally next time you get pulled over, definately do the yes sir, no sir, how high sir routine. If your at a speed trap, you're getting a ticket, but they'll generally cut you a break if your nice. Getting angry never helps.
I've been pulled over twice in the last few years, and being "nice" has gotten me out of a ticket twice. One was over 80 in a 55 zone.

I agree with the other folks who say you got caught speeding and deserve the ticket. Twenty or more MPH over the posted speed limit is a far cry from a "I didn't know what the speed limit was, officer". I'll also add that going 85MPH at night, you're probably outrunning your headlights which isn't a good idea either.
I've rarely (read: never) have seen a car not speeding get pulled over and ticketed for speeding. And don't blame the cop for doing his job. He's just a man trying to make a living too.
You want to go fast? Spend that ticket/lawyer money on a track day and you'll be scared before your car even gets to its limits.

Several years ago, I was driving a 71 Vette on the interstate and crossed the Mississippi state line entering Alabama. I was traveling in excess of 120mph and passed 4-5 State troopers hidden in the deeply depressed divider between east and west. I was already on top of them before I saw them so felt no need to slow down (after all they had didn't they?). I kept watching my rear view mirror waiting for the inevitible but it never happened. My only guess is they must have been waiting for one of Americas most wanted.
yeah, 85 on any road isnt very safe. even on the interstate with 70 mph your still doing alot. maybe if you plea guilty the judge will give you driving school. your not gonna win your case in court (honestly) and the court fees are higher if you go in front of a jury and crap. cut your losses and drive more responsible,
however, if you fight it you have my best of luck.

I doubt a radar would help much. The cop probably clocked your car first, without shooting other cars before (I would argue that HID lights are more flashy at night ...).
Speeding tickets ain't cheap. I had a nasty ticket around 6 years ago, which costed me over 800 dollars of fine. I felt like killing myself when I got the ticket ... well ... cuz I was being stupid ...
If I remember correctly, 15mph is the highest that you would wanna go over. The marginal cost (in terms of fines and points) is much higher beyond 15mph. Also, some insurance companies do not consider speeding tickets below 15mph over the limit as a speeding ticket on record -- thus your insurance would not go up.
Anyhow, sorry to hear your situation. Maybe try going to a court and fight for a lower fine?
Here is my question: was there other cars around you beside the truck? If there was a whole army of cars travelling at the same speed as yours, then you could probably argue that you were just going with the flow and sped up to pass? Nonetheless, good luck ...
