I think this means you need to change your transmission fluid. Did mine this year at around 5500 miles because my 2nd gear was getting kinda notchy. Used the new improved Honda MTF and am Amazed at how much smoother it is . Smoother than when it was new. Try it!

It's a very common problem with the AP1 transmission. Mine got so bad I started losing gears. Fortunately for me, Hondacare paid to rebuild my tranny--but it wasn't easy.

Do a search for 1st-2nd grind and you'll find all kinds of suggestions on how to make it a little better without paying for a rebuild (e.g. change fluid, change shifting technique, change the way you hold your knob...blah, blah, blah). Most will probably not work, but it's worth a shot. The first thing, however, should be to change your tranny fluid. It helped me a little at first, but 1000 miles later, gears were excessively grinding again.

If nothing helps, and your car is still under warranty, you can try getting the dealership to fix it. However, they will most likely tell you there's nothing wrong and send you home. But, at least you will have a record that you complained about it in case it gets worse down the road.

After 17000 miles, I would definitely get the fluid changed.
