I understand the difference between notchy and grinding, and it's a certified grind.
The '04 models are still a little notchy, but don't experience the grinding as much as the '00-'03 model years.
I was aware of the notchy nature of the S2000 before I bought the car.
eek....i would double clutch shift in to 2nd...that works for the notchiness i get in the morning on cold startups

I've got over 40k miles on my '02 never experiencing any grinding issues, at any rpm, in any gear. I've done 2 tranny fluid changes.

Only time I get a 1-2 grind is when I mis-shifted a couple of times.
