I think an ideal combo would be the 4.77 rear end combined with a .697 6th gear set (instead of the stock .811).

What matters in street encounters is time to distance. A car geared to hit 58 MPH in 2nd may have an inferior 0-60 to a car that can stay in 2nd until the 60s. But it will likely be ahead at all times as far as distance traveled is concerned.

>>>Hopefully, most aren't interested in street encounters either, but I agree that 0-60 isn't important unless you are a magazine writer. I think the benefit is going to come in handy at the track, autocrosses, and even daily stop-n-go traffic.<<

It wouldn't be a good idea for auto-x. Sure it would help. But it would bump you up in class so far that you'd have to do tons of other stuff to catch up. Fun all the time though.

>>>I guess if you autocross with SCCA, then gears probably wouldn't be a good idea, but the 3 clubs that I autocross with wouldn't reclassify a car based on gears. It isn't particularly fair, but their events are SO MUCH better than SCCA.<<<

With which groups do you run?

There are 3 clubs that all have similar events in Mineral Wells, Tx, at a WWII helecopter training pad. The clubs are PCA (Porsche Club of America), BMWCCA (BMW Car Club of America - Lone Star Region), and NTS2K (North Texas S2000 Owners). All 3 clubs have 8 runs that are generally between 1 and 1.5 miles each (~100 seconds). Top speeds are usually close to 85 MPH.

There are some video clips at www.s2000.org. My favorite is "greg5.mpg" (http://www.trithese.com/ASan/movies/greg5.mpg), since it is a bumper cam video (on my car AND FTD), but there are several others. My max speed in that video was about 90 MPH. I only used 1st gear to launch. The rest was 2nd and 3rd gear. If you want to download another of mine, the only other good one is "greg1.mpg" (http://www.trithese.com/ASan/movies/greg1.mpg).

You aren't going to get more horsepower with gears. If that worked, we'd have 10 speeds. In the late '80's I watched a lot of Mustang 5.0 performance times. It took about 100 hp to knock one second off the 1/4 mile. That car didn't weigh a lot more than ours. Do the math for a Z06 and you'll see what I mean. As far as off the line driveablility, I like the idea. I just need an extra gear on the top end now. Or, a different 1 and 2 gear cluster.
