So what's holding you back?

It's always easier said than done, but hopefully I'll purchase the necessary tools to do a proper oil change and work from there.

I disagree. I always go with Honda or something better. For example, I have Mobil 1 in the engine, Honda MTF in the transmission, Mobil 1 in diff, Valvoline in the clutch, and Honda in the brakes. Next time the brakes need to be bled, I'll be going with Motul.
Or you can do even better.....

Clutch: ATE Superblue
Brakes: ATE Superblue or MOTUL 600
Motor: Amsoil 10W-30 (or whatever weight you like)
OilFilter: Amsoil SDF-20
Tranny: Amsoil Synthetic Direct Honda replacement MTF(yes, thats what its called)
Diff: Amsoil 75-90 or LE Engineering

My car runs like melted butter swimming in double cream with this stuff.

You need a hydraulic floor jack (low profile). You need jackstands. You need a set of wrenches. A socket set is a good idea. A torque wrench. A hammer (plastic deadblow). The Helm manual is invaluable, but will cost you about $80. Etc.

If you have no tools, it will cost you more to do the 30K service than it would to have a dealer do it -- the first time. But then you can do it youself again and again, for very little extra cost.

For many people it really does make financial sense to just hire somebody else to do the work. But there is nothing quite like *knowing* exactly what's been done to your car and exactly what condition it is in.

If you track the car, you'll end up doing this stuff so often that it starts making good sense to have an air compressor, air tools, lots of specialty tools, maybe even a lift, etc.

Yeah, I change the tranny fluid all the time. The guy who runs Spoon mentioned that he thought tranny fluid changes were more important than oil changes for track duty.

I just got my S, with 52K on it. Doing the 60K checkup right now because I'm not clear on what maintainance it's recieved in the past. Some things, like the brake fluid are often not changed when they're supposed to be. I don't trust many of the service intervals either. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Fluids are cheap and it just doesn't take that long to do the whole job.

30/60/90k services are a total rip off. They use what, 40 dollars worth of parts and charge you 3-4 hundred? lol.

If you aren't doing your own oil changes, you're just lazy anyways
No offense, but I disagree. I am not lazy about my car in any way, just ask my wife. It gets detailed every night when I get home, for example. Yeah, Wash and Wax Wacko for sure....but I am in no way lax about tending to my S.

The reason I do not mess with the regular maintenence, such as an oil change, is I have no way to dispose of the waste oil. I live in a small town outside of Kansas City, and its a pain in the ass to deal with. Dropping my car off, getting a ride to work, having them pick me up and take me to my car is much easier. Sure they used $40-$50 worth of parts....but it saved me time by them dealing with it. Worth every penny.

Now, when I changed my front brake pads, I just did that myself with some help from another S2KI board member whom is a good friend of mine. It took 20 minutes....very simple change and old pads are just thrown in the trash.

No. Besides, what warranty are you referring to? The standard warranty on the car only goes to 36K, not 60K.
i only have 14,700 miles on mine right now. so Im only half way there.

But the question was about "60k mile service".

Still, the answer is "no, doing your own service does not void the warranty" -- not unless you do it wrong and they can prove it....

I'm close to 59K and i'm not taking it in. I already changed tranny and diff fluid. So i guess i'll take a look at brake and clutch fluid and that should do it.

I generally don't take my cars in for service. NOBODY cares about your car like you do! I've figured that out the hard way. So if it's something i know how to do, me and my buddy take it on.

The only thing i need is THREADS LIKE THIS!!. to tell me what i'm suppose to be doing. he he he
