8900 Redline? LOL
Redline means just that - where the red line starts on the tach. If you look at your tach, and count the little hash marks, you will see that 8900 is the RED part of the display. Just because Honda put a big fat "9" next to it does not make it 9,000 rpm.
The rev limiter is closer to 9000 rpm. Sometimes I can record a high rpm of 9000 when I push it to the limiter, but most of the time the limiter catches it before 9000 and I only record 8900. But I'm not heartbroken. The car performs the same no matter what the tach says.

The redline is frequently quoted as 9000 RPM, but I think you'll find that it really is 8900. Anybody got any dyno graphs showing something beyond 8900?
I could be mistaken, but I believe that's the point of fuel cutoff.

I thought it was 8900 too. Then I looked it up on the honda website:

Guess I was mistaken. But if you count the segment lights you will see that it is 8900. Maybe they changed it after the 00 model year, or maybe it's cushined on the gage to save the engine.

Fuel Cutoff / Rev Limiter = 9200
The fact that you can actually rev this car up to 9 grand whenever you want means you can say it goes up to 9000 RPMs.
While we're discussing S2000 RPM trivia, VTEC changeover is at 5800/6000/6200 depending on who you ask, depending on atmospheric and heat environment, and I believe you enter VTEC at a different RPM than you leave VTEC. I'm thinking you usually enter VTEC at 6200, and drop out of it at 5800. For a little while, my car was entering VTEC at 6600 whilst driving at 9000 feet up in the mountains in AZ.
Steve's gonna go look for a job now.

I just pulled out my 2001 and 2002 brochures and they both list it as 9000 RPMs.
I'm getting paranoid now. I'm going to have to search all over until I find something in writing that gave me the idea that it was 8900. Why must I be so obsessive???
Oh, get this: I just looked back at that old SAE article written comparing the F20C to the H22A and that article lists the redline as 8800 RPMs!!!
Edit: Before I could even post this, I see that SteveUCI, modifry, and TimTheFoolMan all chimed in and calmed my fears that I was imagining things again... Thanks guys!!!
Hmm, I wonder if I can find anything from Honda that says 8900? The shop manual doesn't seem to list the redline under the specifications... Wonder what the owner's manual says?
Ah,
it. I'll just go for a drive instead.
