I suspect the reason for power graphs stopping short of 9k is because the very upper end of the tachometer is misleading, and makes you think you hit 9k before you actually do. (From what I gather from various s2ki discussions).

8900 / 9000 - it's all good, it's still the highest-revving normally aspirated engine currently in production. 360 modena has nothing on us! (though i'd still drive that italian beast )

what's bad is when Motorvision on Speedvision compared it to the Boxster S and claimed the S2000 had a 10,000-rpm redline! ha!
