91 octane???
I went to gas up at Unocal 76 as I am running 1/4 tank left and when I got there the highest was 91? The guy said I could use 91 that it is the same thing only cleaner. Is that true? I just left and went home.
Please help.
Please help.
I believe the thread is in off-topic, but there is a memo going around from Tosco (unocal/76) saying that all California premium will be going to 91 (vs. 92) starting August 1st. Something to do with ensuring a better supply of premium gas.
I'll be calling the customer service line on Monday to verify, but it wouldn't surprise me a bit if true.
What really pisses me off is that you just know the pricing won't go down a bit relative to the cheaper blends. Never mind that it is cheaper to crack and mix a 91 octane vs. 92. And the whole demand pricing is b.s. too. I went to Phoenix recently, where there isn't a refinery for 500 miles, and premium unleaded was about $1.70-1.80/gallon. Out here in L.A. I pay $2.10 on average and there are three refineries within 10-15 miles of my residence.
I'm ready to organize a protest if the gas companies unilaterally change octane ratings. I'd rather pay $0.10/gal more than get 91. Because on a 12 gallon fill up with 91, to raise my octane by 1 point I'd need to add about 1.5 gallons of 100 octane. At $4.79/gallon, that means I'm paying an additional $4.05/fillup. That comes out to a $0.35/gal premium. Simply ridiculous.
