No Miata love here I think. GTI is very rational(the car Kant would drive), S not rational at all, and Miata only rational for a roadster. What is forgotten about the Miata is you can drive it at WOT, have fun doing it, and keep your license. With the S I feel a radar detector would be mandatory. Central Texas seems to be a good fit for an S however: country roads, lax traffic enforcement, 9 months of warm weather, SUVs to blow by, etc. Hmmmm.......

I just bought my father a Miata and it's super fun. From a practicality standpoint, keep the GTI and pick one of the roadsters.
I've owned 2 two-seaters before and it was a pretty stupid move, I couldn't carry people/things around at all.
If money is tight, just keep the Miata... it's a very capable sports car no matter what other people may say. It will be cheaper to insure, register, and maintain than an S2000... at any rate, good luck in your choice!

The problem is I also test drove a 2001 S and I felt like I was driving a cutting edge, F1 version of the Miata.
I would sell the Miata. If you absolutely need to feel like you're driving a Miata again, you can always put a brick under the S2000's accelerator so you can't get it more than 1/3 of the way down.

I took a friends 98 miata out on some windy roads a few months back and noticed it is incredibly similar to my S. The main difference is the lack of power, the revs climb but the speed doesnt climb like in the S (to be expected). Otherwise, very similar...extreme light feel, responsive, small. However, the Miata feels like more of a "toy", and by that i mean less solid, a more softer gearbox, etc...I say go for the S...

The S is a LOT heavier than a Miata (20% of more) and this is definately noticeable. In terms of tossability and quick steering changes I feel that our Miata is easier to throw around.
