Adhesive for exterior trim pieces - ?... H->S badge experiment
Hi
I'm trying to re apply a portion of the H logo trim to my S front & rear - I've essentially cut the H out and am going to apply the surround part back to surround the S Badges i picked up from Ricks - I've searched S2Ki & not found anything - on the net I've found some products from Dupont & Dymax that are not that easy to get -
Can I get some advice on what product(s) should be used for applying plastic/chrome trim pieces to the exterior?
I've done the trimming on the OEM H Badges - giving them a nice inside bevel so that they'll lay nicely over the S badges & without adhesive they look pretty good (to me) I'll post pics when I've finished the application.
If anyone else has done this & has pics I'd love to see them.
3M makes a product designed especially for gluing on trim pieces. 3M Plastic and Emblem Adhesive Clear, part # 08061. I've had my tube for a number of years and used it for many things. Bought mine at Auto Value or a similiar store.
you can also buy the 3M badge and body moulding tape....not sure of the exact name and product number...(dlq??), but its in a black and red package...gray tape..red backing.
got it in autozone for about $5 a roll. works great.
I've taken a couple of close up shots - from 6 inches away you can see on the inside of the trim where the 'H's were cut out - from 3 or 4 feet - or from just standing in front of or back of -looking at the car the job looks much cleaner...
I'll post a couple of more photo's tomorrow taken in daylight & outside of the garage...
Personally, I use clear silicone. It will not harm paint, stands up to the elements, and does not raise the emblem up. A small amount spread evenly will do it, and then I just hold it in position with a hunk of duct tape until it sets. It can easily be sawed off later without any solvent, and any residue can be scraped off carefully with a plastic "body filler applicator", credit card, etc. Sometimes, it just peels off with the emblem.
I use clear silicone on the dash to hold Velcro adhesives pieves that get hot and loosen (like holding my detector in place, the remote display, etc). Again, it is pliant and string, yet can be removed without damaging the vinyl later when you sell or ewant to go OE look.
RR, all the benefits you listed regarding the clear silicone which is what I used to use are correct, but one little drawback (opinions may vary here) is that like you mentioned it comes off really easy. This makes the job of any thief wanting your emblems or whatever it is you used clear silicone to adhere to the body very easy. But then you can also say "Let the asshole take it rather than scratch and gouge the shit out of my body paneling in an attempt to overcome the much better adherence properties of the double-sided tape" So I guess now I see why RR prefers the clear silicone.
I think it is as strong as tape, and because it does not raise the badge above the surface, looks better, and is harder for someone to just wedge a finger or a small blade under under and pop off. And as you said, if they want the badge, let them have it.
