Default .Advice on break-in period.

Hello all, as you know i was once only a dreamer about having one of these cars. Today my DREAM CAME

TRUE!! Im about to sh*t a brick knowing it's in my garage. I am a very young owner and my parents

bought the car for me. Please dont flame me for being a teenage driver with an s2000. Well my question

here is that... can someone point me in the right direction in breaking in my new s2000. I know the

manual talks about things like keeping it the RPM under 5500 and avoid full throttle such and such. Any

other words of advice? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

No hard braking for at least 600 miles.

Until you learn more from this board, your owner's manual should be your bible. Keep an eye on your oil level, especially once you begin to VTEC. Keep it topped up with 10W30 brand name oil (not synthetic till much later).

Yea the manual told me to do that too. I would like to know how i should drive the car. Ive heard many stories such as don't drive at a constant speed for a period of time, or things such as drive the car hard but dont abuse it. Can someone please help me clarify the facts from the myths?? Anything would be great...i want my s2k to last my whole life..hahhaha . Thanks for all the help!!

So basically, i should keep adding the appropriate amount of oil (petro-base) to the engine. Is it good for me to hit vtech yet? Im scared to drive her that hard already. But maybe thats not at all hard..im just a big fat noob...any other advices?

You want to vary your types of driving. Never drive a constant speed, no cruise control... drive carefully though.

Basic break-in rule: No revs over 5500 rpms for the first 600 miles (stated in the manual). After that, VTEC safely!

I too was a teenager when I got my car, or should I say I still am. Enjoy it a lot, try not to show off too much (generates enemies and jealousy to others), and most of all, take good care of it!

I know you are excited right now but take the time to read your owner's manual. Most of the answers are there. Many more answers can be found using the "search" here. What you can't find, ask specific questions for specific answers. General things that we could tell you would fill a book - actually, it would fill "the owner's manual".
For example: Should you VTEC yet? Well, you just told us you know the manual says do not exceed 5500 rpm for so many miles right? Well, VTEC happens at 6000 rpm, so common sense would say, NO!
Also, put a post in your local Houston forum and try to hook up with some of those fellas. It would benefit you greatly to meet up with them and talk face to face about "stuff".

DEFINATELY CHECK OIL. I can not stress this enough. I just got my car in December and it ate through two quarts of oil during breaki-in. This car is one thirsty beast...lol

Congrads on the car...Welcome

Interstate driving is one of the best ways to break-in your engine, you do this by varying your speed = varying your RPMs. This is important part of the break-in, you're seating the rings by doing this. Check your oil ! Everyone tells you to do this and everyone is right ! I've noticed from some of the postings that some engines may drink a large amount oil between 2,000 and 4,000 miles. Some people have added as much as 1 qt. during this time. And the driver's side of the dip stick is the correct reading.
